HEAD OF COLLEGE
Chorale
Last Saturday evening
at St John’s Cathedral
in the city, the St Peters
community was treated
to a wonderful concert
by our Chorale. It was
my first experience of
the St Peters Music
program, and it did not
disappoint. The concert
was a celebration of their recent European
Tour. Just looking at the tour itinerary, it was
clearly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The
opportunity to perform before knowledgeable
and appreciative audiences in some of the great
historical cathedrals of the world must have been
amazing. Listening to them perform throughout
the evening, I found that I had to remind myself
that it was a school choir, such was the quality
of performance. The Chorale was only able
to achieve such heights through considerable
hard work, practice and effort; and a music staff
that supported, pushed, stretched and inspired
their students. The concert will live long in my
memory, and I look forward to many more.
Thank you to our staff for providing these sorts
of opportunities for our students.
Failure is not a dirty word
Some years ago, I read an article titled “Failure
is not a dirty word”. In the article, the point was
made that a growing number of parents try and
shield their children from failure, setbacks and
disappointments. In doing so, it was suggested
that parents are, in fact, doing their children a
disservice. Failure, setbacks and disappointments
are part of life and how we deal with them
and respond to them are crucial. By trying
to shield children from failures, setbacks and
disappointment, children do not, in fact, learn
the skills and attitudes necessary to deal with
them and overcome them in later life.
There are two qualities that I am particularly
interested in seeing our students develop –
resilience (the capacity to bounce back from a
setback) and persistence (the capacity to keep
going in the face of adversity). As adults, we can
support our children and young people at times
of disappointment, but we are unwise to try and
totally protect them from such situations. How
they face these challenges will have a big impact
on the sorts of men and women they become.
Resilience is therefore a crucial life skill for
children and young people to develop if they are
to achieve success in life.
The second quality of persistence is equally
important. Whatever our children and young
people face, we want them to adopt a ‘never
give in approach’. As Albert Einstein suggests:
‘we only fail because we stop trying’.
Learning is part of life’s journey. Mistakes are
inevitable when we choose to attempt things
which are new and beyond our current level of
learning. Thomas Edison, the inventor of the
light bulb, had it right when he approached each
unsuccessful experiment to develop the light
bulb not as failure, but as progress, because
he was another step closer to discovering the
answer. Attempts to avoid failure are futile
because they are, in fact, steps on our life and
learning journeys.
Society’s expectations of schools often focus
on a ‘performance culture’ where learning is
about competing with other students. A more
productive outlook is to talk about a ‘learning
culture’ in which all students make mistakes,
but are encouraged and supported so that they
grow over time. We do not want our children
and young people to be frightened by failure,
but rather, to see it as just a disappointment
along the way; a disappointment that, with hard
work and determined effort, they can overcome.
The article concluded: ‘Above all, children in our
schools need to be encouraged to see failures
as an event, not a state; to develop a belief
that, although all humans experience failure, no
human is a failure’.

MINISTRY
Servant leadership
The Son of Man came to serve, not be served.
Mark 10: 45
James and John got the jump on the other
disciples, and asked for the top two positions
next to Jesus when he came into his glory in
Jerusalem. Jesus knew he was heading to his
death on a cross, but the disciples had no idea.
Did Jesus just roll his eyes, shake his head at
them or laugh? We’re not told. He patiently
instructed the disciples that power wasn’t to
go to their heads, but they were to be servants
to all.
Good leadership is always servant leadership,
whether it is General Sir Peter Cosgrove or
coaching Year 5 students to build up their skills,
work together as team and have fun (I must stop
obsessing about the Trump style of ‘leadership’.)
Servant leadership. It’s not about you being
centre front. It’s about you using your strengths
to make others look good and achieve together.
Do it well, and people don’t even notice you.
It’s relying on a deeper goodness and
groundedness, which is always God’s
unconditional love for us in Christ. Our
strength can run out or get frazzled. God’s
strength doesn’t.
It’s not about being popular, or being sucked in
to doing what people want you to do for them.
I am always impressed with how the Ironbark
hike staff carefully check out each complaint or
query from a Year 9 student who is struggling.
Unless there is a good reason, they very patiently
insist that students take a break, have a sip
of water and a bite to eat, and then keep on
going with their group. The lift in the students
on day 4, when they know they are going to
finish 51kms of hike, and finish well, is palpable.
Taking the lead as a parent, and setting good
boundaries for teens can be equally challenging,
but vital for their wellbeing. Parenting is not
about being cool or popular.

Gathering
Thursday 9 March, 8:30am at Lower
Primary Library Deck
A group of St Peters Robotics students have formed a partnership with Robotics students at Grace
Lutheran College. Together, they are building a robot to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition
at Olympic Park, Sydney, in March. Teams from around the world will compete for a place at the
international competition.
The students’ robot uses custom made aluminium construction and will weigh around 40kg. Their
goal is to construct a winching mechanism to lift the entire robot up rope a metre off the ground
within 30 seconds. This task has real-world applications in areas such as manufacturing, construction
and search and rescue.

THE ARTS
The 2017 workshop program will
commence in Week 4.
Workshops
• Photography with Charlotte and Mr Higgins;

• Studio Mixed Media with Savannah and
Ms Seidel.
On Tuesday 7 February, Year 12 students were presented with their Senior Badges on assembly. This
is the first step in a number of ‘rites of passage’ as they move towards life beyond the College.
The presentation was accompanied by the reciting of the senior oath and a short ode, which outlines
the responsibilities that will fall on Year 12 students’ shoulders. These responsibilities align with the
leadership roles that all students in Year 12 undertake.
This year, Year 12 students will also participate in other rites of passage including; the Valedictory
Dinner, the ‘Guard of Honour’ and the ‘Valedictory Service’, all recognising and celebrating the
milestones on the path to completing their final year of formal schooling.
We congratulate the class of 2017 on their leadership positions and wish them well for their
final year.

The Music Education through Band and Strings (MEBS) program is in full swing. Students received
their instruments last Thursday and have been happily making squeaks and noises all week. Very
soon these sounds will become music.
Please note that students must bring their instrument, green folder, tutor book and signed hire forms
to lesson this Thursday. All instruments are to be stored in the Band Store room during the day and
taken home on Thursday afternoon for weekly practice.

AIC Cricket and
Volleyball
Due to the extreme heat, scheduled AIC Fixtures
were cancelled last Saturday. This decision was
made in the interest of student, staff and family
welfare. I know many of our Volleyball and
Cricket teams were disappointed to miss this
round however, we can now make the most of
an extra week of preparation ahead of a tough
assignment against Marist this weekend.
Round 3 AIC action will be against Marist College
this Saturday 18 February, with the Senior teams
travelling away and Juniors playing at home.
I urge our volleyballers to focus on competing
hard for each and every point, and hope our
cricketers continue to aim high and set up early,
steady batting partnerships. We look forward to
the challenge of another competitive weekend
against strong opposition.
AIC Swimming
Coordinator: Mr Peter Dawson

Training continues on Monday (25m pool) and
Wednesday (50m pool) mornings from 6.00am.
Well done to boys who either attended training
this week or were at the meet last Friday
afternoon. For those that were at both – great
job! It was great to see our boys compete and
we look forward to sharpening our starts, setting
new PB’s and seeing more new faces at training
this week.
Please remember that, at this point in the
season, Monday and Wednesday morning
swimming sessions take priority over all other
training. We hope to reclaim the AIC Swimming
Championship in 2017 so all interested
swimmers should attend the trainings and meets
and do the College proud!
Finally, this Friday evening (17 February) will be
the third Invitational Swim Meet at the St Peters
50m pool from 4:00–6:30pm. We look forward to
seeing many boys in attendance.

Well done to all girls who have participated in the sports on offer so far this term. We have been
pleased with the number of girls participating.
This week, we have been busy finalising our teams for our Autumn Fixtures (Basketball, Football and
Touch) as we will play trial games against Somerville House on Friday 3 March. Congratulations to all
girls who have been selected. It is important that you attend training sessions with dedication and
enthusiasm. Remember to always let your coach and coordinator know of any inability to attend
training as attendance is a very important facet of sport. Without working hard during training,
improvements in our performance and working together as a team can’t happen effectively. It is this
aspect of teamwork that is one of the most enjoyable parts of being involved in team sport and your
teammates rely on you to turn up and give 100% every time.
Autumn Fixtures
Basketball, Football, Touch
Please note that we have the following dates for our fixtures this term:
• Friday 3 March: Trial games vs Somerville House;
• Friday 10 March: Round 1 AWAY vs BSHS;
• Monday 20 March: Round 2 HOME vs St Margaret’s; and
• Friday 24 March: Round 3 HOME vs MBC.
Swimming Carnival
It is now time to turn our attention to Cross
Country and get serious about our training.
Like all sports, it is important that we utilise
the coaches on staff and use their expertise
to improve each and every one of our
performances. Remember, every girl counts and
if you can improve your individual time you are
also improving our overall placing at the QGSSSA
Championships on Saturday 13 May. Time is
going to go very quickly and so it is important
that you commit to our Cross Country team now.
Remember that every girl only runs a 3km course
and, if you are participating in another sport at
the College, chances are you already have a base
fitness level to run with us. It is important that
you start specific training for Cross Country now.
Our first meet for Cross Country is on Wednesday
15 March.
If you are planning to run for us on QG day
please attend a meeting on Friday 17 February at
12.50pm (lunchtime) in SN1 so that we can give
you an overview of the season ahead.
Training and Draws
Congratulations to Cunningham on another successful Interhouse Swimming Carnival last Thursday.
It was great to see so many students dressed up and participating for their house. Whilst it was a
day of fun, there was also a great display of swimming talent with some very close races in the age
championship events.
We celebrate the general leadership and support our Year 12’s showed for students across the
College. They did an outstanding job of ensuring that everyone had a good day at the pool. This
sometimes meant getting in the pool themselves to swim alongside younger members of their house!
QGSSSA Swimming Championships
On Wednesday 1 March, our big QGSSSA Swimming Championships will take place. For anyone who
has been to Chandler for this meet in previous years, you will know this is one of the noisiest, most
exciting sporting events to grace our calendars. Look out for information regarding the girls we will
take along as spectators. We will take as many supporters as we can. It is sure to be an exciting night
when we aim for four wins in a row. Our swimmers have been training hard over summer and we
wish them the best of luck as they enter the end of their QG season.
There are two meets left before the big event and only three full training sessions. Please make sure
you continue to attend Monday and Wednesday sessions as it is important to finish our season off
strongly. Remember to sign up for the bus to the meet at St Margaret’s at The Valley pool on Friday
night (17 February) via the Swimming Newsletter which has been emailed to you by Mrs Russell.
