Children’s Music News
Notes from the Director
The children’s music groups at St. Michael’s are
off and running. I am impressed with how well
each group is already coming together. I look
forward to the upcoming months to see how
everyone continues to grow musically.
We always welcome additional singers to join
Celebration Singers and Spirit Choir. This
month, I encourage all current singers to invite
someone else to join us for choir rehearsals.
Weekly attendance is not necessary, but certainly
helps build a sense of community and improves
musical skills. Plus, we always have a great time!
When singing at services, please have students to
the Choir Room by 8:20 when singing at the 8:45
service. Warm-ups begin at 10:40 when we sing at
the 11:00 service. I usually gather students from
Sunday School, but a reminder from parents is
always helpful.
October 2011
Celebrate the Seasons
Reformation Sunday is traditionally celebrated
on the last Sunday of October. The color of the
day is red.
In 1517 Martin Luther nailed 95 theses (or
complaints) against the Roman Catholic Church
to a church door in Wittenburg, Germany. One
of Luther’s main themes questioned the act of
selling indulgences, believing that paying for
forgiveness went against church teachings. He
also believed that doing good works and
confessing sins did not earn salvation. Rather,
Luther preached that salvation was brought to us
through faith and by God’s grace. Luther also
believed that all people should sing the service
(not just the priest and choir), that words of the
service should be in the native language rather
than in Latin, that prayer should be directed to
God and that music is a gift of God.
Looking Ahead
The Youth Bells are working on learning ringing
techniques and have been ringing a few anthems.
It is exciting to see how quickly this group is
mastering the techniques of bell ringing. We will
make our debut on November 6th.
Rehearsals
When we sing/ring, each group will sit together in
the front of the church. Although there is no set
attire, please dress appropriately for worship (no
torn jeans, T-shirts, etc.). I encourage all families
to sit near the front with us when we sing/ring in
worship. Your help throughout the service is
essential to full participation of the choirs in
worship.
If you have not yet done so, please fill out a
registration form. This is extremely important so
that I have the necessary contact information for
you.
Thanks so much for a great start to the school
year!

deserves the highest praise.”
