WEBSTER, HARLEY (HARGREAVES OGILVIE)
Harley Webster was born in Bunbury in 1909 and was educated at Bunbury High School and
Claremont Training College before appointments to various primary schools up to the year
1974 when he retired as headmaster of Albany Central Primary School. In 1964 he was
awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree at UWA. In 1932 he had begun a serious study of
ornithology culminating in the re-discovery of the Noisy Scrub Bird, which was thought to be
extinct, at Two People Bay in December 1961. A long campaign to protect the bird’s habitat
from development as a town site began with support from the Duke of Edinburgh and
eminent scientists, Dr. Norman Robinson and Dr. Dom Serventy, among others. In 1966 the
area was preserved as the Two People Bay Nature Reserve. The collection includes
extensive correspondence with Drs. Robinson and Serventy concerning the recording and
photography of the birds of Two People Bay.
