Michigan Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf M I R I D proudly presents M I R I D MIRID 2005 Spring Conference Sailing Into the Future Trix Bruce - “ASL Semantics: Precision of Expression in ASL” Semantics is defined as the study of meanings expressed by the elements of a language or a combination of the elements. A concept expressed in an ASL sign often cannot be conveyed by a single all-purpose English word. Likewise, English words and phrases may have variations in meaning, which require translations using different ASL signs. This workshop helps the student advance skills in translating the languages of ASL and English. Edna Johnston - “ASL Etymology” This workshop explores the sign origins of ASL, the perspectives on iconicity and arbitrariness of sign languages, and the similarities and differences between LSF and ASL. The presenter spent three and a half months in France on sabbatical studying these topics, and has a wealth of information to share with us. Jamie McCartney: “Techie Terp” Delynn Saunders - “Understand your role? Role Play of Each Setting for Deaf/Hearing Interpreters” This workshop is for Deaf and hearing participants interested in exploring the role as working as deaf-hearing teams. It includes a discussion of the roles of each setting (setting before, during, after the assignments of each setting). Her philosphy is, “Change the environment, not yourself”.
