Trix Bruce - “ASL Semantics: Precision of Expression in ASL”
Semantics is defined as the study of meanings expressed by the elements of a language or a combination
of the elements. A concept expressed in an ASL sign often cannot be conveyed by a single all-purpose
English word. Likewise, English words and phrases may have variations in meaning, which require
translations using different ASL signs. This workshop helps the student advance skills in translating the
languages of ASL and English.
Edna Johnston - “ASL Etymology”
This workshop explores the sign origins of ASL, the perspectives on iconicity and arbitrariness of sign
languages, and the similarities and differences between LSF and ASL. The presenter spent three and a
half months in France on sabbatical studying these topics, and has a wealth of information to share with
us.
Jamie McCartney: “Techie Terp”
Delynn Saunders - “Understand your role? Role Play of Each Setting for Deaf/Hearing Interpreters”
This workshop is for Deaf and hearing participants interested in exploring the role as working as
deaf-hearing teams. It includes a discussion of the roles of each setting (setting before, during, after
the assignments of each setting). We will also use simulations (role-plays) to practice some of the
techniques and solutions.

Patricia (Trix) Bruce, from Seattle, Washington, is known
nationwide as both a workshop presenter and an ASL performer.
Trixʼs work has been warmly received everywhere, from
local community centers, to state, regional, and national RID
conferences, Deaf Way II, interpreter conventions and more.
Wildly popular as a teacher of ASL storytelling and ASL
interpretation, Trix impresses audiences at all levels of ASL skill,
from novices to fluent experts.
Trix has been profoundly deaf since she was six months old.
She went through oral, mainstreaming, deaf classes, and online
educational programs. Trix has been involved in the performing
arts since 1980. After completing her college program, she
became involved with interpreter training.

focus on ASL Performance. She is an approved sponsor for
the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certificate
Maintenance Program, and has developed two popular
websites, www.aslworkshop.com and www.trixbruce.com.
Whether writing, creating, improvising, or starring in her many
productions, Trixʼs passion for the dramatic arts shines through.
Brenda Cartwright, an experienced interpreter, teacher and

counselor for Goodwill Industries, and an ASL instructor at the
Indiana School for the Deaf. She has been working as a deaf
interpreter for five years. Delynn has been involved in many
organizations, including serving as chair of the Region 3 Deaf
Caucus, a board director of the Illinois Registry of Interpreters
for the Deaf, Deaf Women United, RID and NAD. She has been
providing CDI study groups in Illinois. She is currently in the

instructor in the ASL-English Interpretation Department at
Columbia College, Chicago for the past 12 years. She holds a
