Proyecto Mono Tocón
Despite the increase in activities of the Proyecto Mono Tocón, we
managed to limit the increase of general budget. However, it should be
said that this was only possible thanks to the voluntary work of the
coordinators and other persons. The more activities we develop, the more
coordination will be necessary, and funding is unfortunately lacking to
remunerate this work. We will need to find a solution for this problem.
The total costs are divided in separate departments, but as their activities
are more and more combined it is not always possible to separate costs.
However, we just want to give an impression how much money was spend
for each activity.
Antonio Bóveda Penalba and Noelia Venegas Martín have (part-time)
coordinated in 2012 the project, through “Asociación Sugkamat”. Jan
Vermeer managed the project at a voluntary basis. We are very fortunate
that his travel costs to Peru were financed by Apenheul Primate Park, for
whom he is coordinating another nature conservation project in Peru.
The European zoos that keep red titi monkeys ( C. cupreus) in their
collection have continued their financial support to the project. We hope
that the other zoos that keep the species in their collection will join them.
Conservation
International
Peru
and
GIZ
(German
International
Development Service) also continued their support to the Proyecto Mono
Tocón. The latter organisation paid us for the administrative support that
we provided for their tourism project.
A
research project on the distribution of San Martin titi monkeys was
financed with a grant provided in 2011 by Thoiry-Peaugres Conservation
(the conservation fund of the French zoos Thoiry and Peaugres). This
organisation already provided a new grant of € 5.500 to continue the
study in 2013.
The Zoo d’Amneville (France) is an important new supporter of Proyecto

Mono Tocón. They have pledged the annual amount of € 10.000 for a
period of at least three years. Their funding will especially be used for our
work in the Central Huallaga region, where we support the creation and
management of new conservation concessions.
For the surveys on the distribution range of the mountain uakaris
(Cacajao calvus ssp.), which will take place in 2013, we received donations
from the French CEPA (Conservation des Espèces et des Populations
Animales, the German ZGAP (Zoologische Gesellschaft für Arten– und
Populationschutz) and the French Zoo “la Boissière du Doré”.
The Primate Action Fund of Conservation International and Primate
Conservation Inc. have awarded Proyecto Mono Tocón the necessary
grants to conduct the study on titi monkey distribution in the Atalaya
region.
Cleveland Metroparks Zoo/Scott Neotropical Fund will finance the study
on forest fragment connectivity.
In 2012 our team carried out a huge amount of work. There is still so much
to do, but it is difficult to find the funding to expand the work of Proyecto
Mono Tocón. However, we hope that the addition of the species to the list
of the World’s 25 Most Endangered Species will help us to find new
supporters. The destruction of the titi monkey’s habitat is continuing at
high speed, and there is little time to safe this species from extinction.
The financial administration is conducted by a professional external
accountant, and audited each spring.
