Resolution Where we’re going: The students will record the main characters, events, causes, and outcome of the 1st Punic War using a story-board worksheet. The students will illustrate their understanding by creating a storyboard poster depicting the important information from their worksheet. The students will characterize the actions of the Romans during the 1st Punic War as aggressive or defensive using text-evidence and summarize their conclusion on a “take-away” slip. Today’s Story Title: 1st Punic War Characters The Story Begins: Team 1: Rome At this point in our story, if you were asked to relate Rome to a type of person in school who would it be? Strong Seemingly Invincible Thought the world was theirs to have! Rome’s Motto: Mare Nostrum -“Our Sea” Team 2: Carthaginians Phoenician colony founded in 800 BCE Looking at the map, and where Carthage is located, what do you think their main source of income was? *Coastal town-‐ Sea trade *Controlled trade in the western Mediterranean *Carthaginian trading empire spread to islands of Corsica, Sardinia, and western Sicily, along with southern Iberian peninsula (modern-‐day Spain) Present-day Tunisia Rome’s Strengths Vs. Summary: Go Men Go! *Romans invade Northern Africa 256-255B.C Bad luck happens for the Romans... a storm comes through and destroys almost the entire Roman navy The Roman army now is stranded in the desert by themselves, and they die... Carthaginians destroy them. Stalemate until around 240 B.C. the war is becoming a war of attrition because they are all running out of money/ financial problems. “Who can hold out the longest” 3. A few years later... * 240 B.C Roman gov’t raises taxes enough, rebuilds the army! * Loyal Army! * Vs: * 242 B.C Carthage is virtually bankrupt-- no army (they leave cause they’re not getting paid) Paid Army= Army of Mercenaries * Worksheet: Main Events: 1. Corvus: (Rome’s advantage) boarding plank that connects two boats together so a naval battle becomes a “land” battle-- one-to-one combat 2. Battle of Mylae 260 B.C: Rome wins using the Corvus. Invade in N.E. Africa 3. Stalemate until 240 B.C.: No one has any money! Rome finally raises enough money for their army. Why? Group Pictorial Story Board: Directions: 1. Split into groups of 2-3 2. Create one picture with your group using poster board and colored markers of the theme of a good story (plot, characters etc) assigned to your group. 3. Come together and share why you drew what you did.
