I am now a caregiver for my 93 year old Grandmother, and I live in Mt Albert. I have qualifications in Business Administration, Contact Centre Operations, Security and Healthcare. I believe that all elderly and disabled people like to retain a sense of independence and dignity, by being able to remain living in their own homes. This can be achieved, if the Auckland DHB allocated more funding and more hours for homecare support services. No matter how dependent or independent, an elderly or disabled person may be, they should still have the right to choose to remain living in their own home, with unlimited homecare support services made available, as opposed to being placed into a resthome or private hospital. Security should be affordable, if not free, for the elderly, while they are living in their own home. No elderly or disabled person in the community should ever feel alone. Vulnerable patients such as the elderly, children, disabled etc must not be pushed to the back of the queue. Budgets are stretched to the limit. Waiting times will get longer and longer without action. I will fight for improved services and shorter waiting lists.
