the rest of the First Infantry.
As in all camps of 'the Spanish war, much sickness was encountered. The muster out rolls
of Co. G show that out of 102
•who were on the rolls, 95 were
reported sick at some time or
other, although many were
merely ill in quarters and did
not go to the hospital. Despite
•this great proportion of the
company's membership reported sick, it lost only three men.
Pvt. Benjamin F. Hart, Oregon, died of peritonitis Aug. 5,
1898.
Corp. Claude D. Milward,
Madison, died of typhoid fever
Aug. 18, 1898.
Corp. Roy Maynard, Madison, died of dysentery Aug. 20,
1898.

While at Camp Cuba. Libre,
Capt. Quenlmeyer was detailed
to command the First battalion
from July 25 to Sept. 10, by virtue of seniority and First Lieut.
Baker commanded Co. G from
July 25 to Aug. 9. Lieut. Baker
became acting ordnance officer from Aug. 9 to Sept. 6 and
Lieut. John P. Joachim took
command of Co. G during the
same period.
Meantime, in June, Wisconsin
had been called upon for an
additional regiment of infantry
and a battery of artillery- The
companies then in service also
were ordered to recruit to 106
enlisted .men. Recruiting de-.
tails were sent to various localities in the stale, Lieut. Baker
coming toM adison, where he
enlisted 27 men.
While the troops in Porto Hico
were battling sickness, the First
Regiment soldiers at Jacksonville were having an equally
trying time.
Typhoid was rampant and the
condition of the soldiers became so demoralized that all
drills and work were suspended. Friends and relatives at
home began to demand recall
of the regiment and on Sept. 6
It left for Milwaukee.
Co. G arrived in Madison
Sept. 10, 1898, and was furloughed for 30 days. Telegraph
orders from the adjutant gener
al of the army extended the fur
lough 10 days and the company
was mustered out Ocl. 19, 1838.
ar" was raised throughout America on Feb. 15, 1898, when
the battleship Maine, sent to Havana,
Cuba, because the U. S. government
believed that American citizens were
in danger because oi the Cuban revolution, was destroyed by a mysterious
explosion while anchored in Havana
harbor. Two officers and 250 men were
killed in the explosion which presaged
the start of the Spanish-American war.
Although an investigating committee
reported that the Maine had been destroyed by a submarine mine, it was
unable' to determine responsibility for
the destruction The wreck was raised
in 1911 for examination by a joint army
and navy board and later towed to sea
and permitted to sink.

Money from foreign lands . . . money
from other states ... comes to Wisconsin
to buy the products Allis-Chalmers builds.
This money, coming into the state, is
the direct livelihood of over 52,500 workers and their dependents in Wisconsin
alone.
And as money is made, so money is
spent in Wisconsin ... at a payroll rate
of approximately $1,535,000 a month!
Thus, the real importance of AllisChalmers to Wisconsin is that out of
dollars invested, acres of land used, buildings erected, taxes, paid, human, beings at
work, money spent . . . out of all this,
Wisconsin, as a state, is made richer and
more complete,
