it’s a note from the principal . . .
Hello Tavelli Families,
What an amazing school year we have had
thus far. It is hard to believe that we are
headed to November and snow is in our near
future. The weather this fall has been
delightful! Our Walk-A-Thon went off
without a hitch. Thank you, Mrs., Kaplanides
for leading the charge and to all the
volunteers that gave us so much of their
time!! Also, thank you to the Healthy Kids Club for sponsoring the great
t-shirts, our PTO and the Wellness Committee. Students love to wear
these t-shirts throughout the year and are very proud of the laps they
completed. The day was perfect and it was so fun to see so many
parents, grandparents, and friends come and walk or run with the kids.
This great event raised $20,000.00 dollars for our school. As always, we
will be able to use this money to do great things for our students.
so our children will
SUCCEED
in a global society.

A Note From the Principal
NOVEMBER 2016
continued
Thanks, everyone who attended Parent Teacher Conferences. We had a great
turn out. This is such an important time for parents and teachers to talk about
how your child is doing academically and
socially. Our staff and students are continually
working on creating and implementing
Student Data Notebooks. These notebooks
are used to help students monitor their
progress for their learning. Research indicates
that if students self-report grades they can
grow up to 1.5 years in a school year. The
basis for this is that students take ownership
in their learning and become motivated to
achieve at a higher level. Students thrive when they see themselves
succeeding.
Thank you to the Tavelli parents and community for all coming together and
ensuring that the Fall Festival is a success. The outpouring of candy donations
and people who are willing to volunteer is heartwarming. This free event is fun
for children and adults and provides us an opportunity to meet new people
and laugh and have fun with the kids.

5th Grade Newsletter
5th grade is off and going for the year! ECO week is
always a highlight for the fifth graders here at Tavelli
and this year did not disappoint! The students went
on a choice of four different hikes. Some being
shorter and others quite long and demanding but all
just as beautiful as the next. We had a great time in
our stream ecology, geocaching, weather classes, and
of course, the ropes course. The 5th graders were
excited and engaged in their activities and we are sure they came home with
a lot to share.
In connection with ECO, the fifth grade team decided to have all the students
read the novel Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. The students are enjoying the
excitement of this book as they read about how our main character, Brian
Robeson learns to survive in the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash. The
students are engaged and kept in suspense as we read this wonderful book.
Your 5th Grade Team,
Mrs. Loptien
Mrs. Yarbrough
Mrs. Tyler

Experiment With Science!
What is wrong with this picture? There may be many things you don’t agree
with, but think about it from a science point of view. What is wrong with this
picture that science says can’t be the case? Are you up for the challenge?
When you think you have figured out the scientific error, come to the
Science/Engineering Lab, after the first bell at 8:50 and before the second, to
explain your solution to Mrs. Musante to earn a prize.

The Day Mr. Deck Got Slimed!
Tavelli PTO reached their $20,000
goal with the Walk-a-thon
Fundraiser and as a result, Mr. Deck
got slimed while everyone looked
on. Students in K-2 Grades drew
pictures of what they thought the
outcome would be. You can
compare the actual results with the
students’ predictions, on the next
two pages. Thanks for being a good
sport Mr. Deck!
