The Summoning of Everyman
Medieval Stage Play Recognized as Masterpiece Coming
November 1
Edge of the Universe Players 2 Brings Emotional, Hilarious, and Thoughtprovoking 15th Century Script Back to Life
Performances: November 1-24
Washington, DC During four weekends in November, The Summoning of Everyman will appear
in downtown Washington. D.C.-area director Stephen Jarrett, who has also worked in New York
City and Europe, will direct Everyman, an early English play featuring Death, God, Everyman,
and many others. Though the characters are allegorical, they are also believable and--in some
cases—strongly emotional. The language of the text is easy to understand even if it’s 500 years
old. Alongside the serious theme, comedy is an important and effective aspect of the play. Jarrett
intends to portray a medieval troupe arriving, unpacking, preparing for, and of course enacting
the play. Jarrett also plans interludes of music and dance. Joe Brack of Washington is cast in the
lead role of Everyman.
The Edge of the Universe Players 2 Inc. wanted to bring Everyman to Washington because the
play raises important questions about society and the individual. Despite major changes in
society, this play demonstrates that some problems of human existence are the same now as they
were 500 years ago.
