ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
The learner will:
The learner can:
1. Know how to comply with relevant Health
and Safety legislation, statutory regulations,
official guidance, organisational procedures
and manufacturer’s information when
building brick structures.
1.1. State the current Health and Safety
legislation, statutory regulations, official
guidance and organisational procedures
that apply when:
(a) preparing the area for work
(b) building brick structures.
1.2. State typical safety hazards associated
with building brick structures, explaining
how these can be mitigated by applying
appropriate risk control measures.
1.3. Correctly name and locate the persons
responsible for health and safety within the
specific area of work to which they have
been allocated.
2. Be able to prepare to carry out the task
when building a brick structure.
2.1. Develop a method statement that is fit for
purpose for the task.
2.2. Calculate the materials required to
complete the brick structure.
2.3. Select tools, equipment and resources
required for the task.
2.4. Transport the tools, materials and
resources safely to the designated site for
the brick structure.

3.1. Establish building and frontage lines.
3.2. Mark out the building.
4. Be able to build stretcher and English bond
walls.
4.1. Lay bricks and blocks to form straight walls
and quoins.
4.2. Carry out tooled jointing of brickwork that
meets the specification.
5. Be able to build a reinforced brick wall.
5.1. Lay bricks to form rat trap and quetta bond
walls.
5.2. Install expanded metal lath to specification.
5.3. Create an opening in the wall in
accordance with the specification.
6. Be able to construct a pier and associated
walls.
6.1. Lay bricks to form piers, pier caps and walls
that meet the specification.
6.2. Carry out tooled jointing of brickwork that
meets the specification.
7. Be able to build raking brickwork with
coping.
7.1. Lay bricks to form raking cuts that meet the
specification.
7.2. Lay bricks on edge that meet the
specification.
7.3. Carry out tooled jointing of brickwork that
meets the specification.
