PROFESSIONAL LEGAL TRAINEE POSITIONS AT IMMIGRATION ADVICE AND RIGHTS CENTRE (IARC) Interested in helping asylum seekers, refugees and vulnerable migrants? Curious about what it’s like to work in a community legal centre? If you did law because you were passionate about human rights and social justice, loved research or wanted to help people negotiate the legal system, then the Immigration Advice and Rights Centre (IARC) is the place to put your knowledge and your passion into practice while completing the work experience component of your PLT. IARC is a Community Legal Centre that works with asylum seekers, refugees and vulnerable migrants. We provide free legal advice and assistance s to vulnerable clients in matters such as protection visas (with particular expertise in LGBTIQ protection visas), family visas (with the majority of our work under the family violence provisions) and visa cancellation, and citizenship. IARC is also heavily involved in policy and law reform and community development, education and advocacy. The IARC legal team is small and highly skilled. As such you will receive excellent one on one training and supervision. You will learn about immigration law and the political environment we work in. You will be exposed to the legal and community sector and experience a unique way of working. You will be taught interviewing skills, file management and the fundamentals of working in a legal practice. Your responsibilities will include undertaking research and drafting documents, being involved in the carriage of matters and working with clients. Selection criteria YOU MUST ADDRESS THE SELECTION CRITERIA FOR YOUR APPLICATION TO BE CONSIDERED We are looking for people who a) have previous volunteer experience b) can demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and verbal c) can demonstrate a commitment to human rights and social justice d) are willing to help where needed, have initiative and are organised e) are nearing completion of College of Law, or the equivalent at participating universities. We have a required minimum of 60 days of the 75-day work experience component of your PLT f) are able to work three days a week. This is an unpaid position.
