Biography
Professor Alpheus Sanford was graduated from the University of Maine with a B.A. degree in 1947.
While attending the University, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and to Phi Kappa Phi. He received his
M.Ed from Boston University in 1954 and Ed.D. in 1959. He was appointed to the College of Education
faculty (Counselor Education) in 1958 at the University of Maine and retired from there as Professor
Emeritus in 1991.

Scope and Contents of the Records
Papers of a professor in the College of Education at the University of Maine. The papers reflect the
career of a college educator in the field of counseling and school guidance from 1958 until retirement
in 1991. Included are course syllabi, overviews of the counselor education program, performance
agreements, pupil and peer evaluations, journal articles, and other materials related to graduate education
at the University. Also included are records of eight Counselor Education Institutes resulting from the
United States National Defense Education Act of 1958. Dr. Sanford taught in all of the Institutes, and
directed six of them. Dr. Sanford was influential in establishing a K-12 developmental school guidance
program in the state of Maine. Material in regard to this development is included in his papers. Also
included are some writings of a special interest of Dr. Sanford's which he referred to as "Partnership
Counseling".
