2016 ANNUAL REPORT
RECTOR’S REPORT – KINDNESS AND CARING
Whenever I write my annual report I feel blessed to review all that our Parish has undertaken
over the past year and all that we continue to do. It has been a year of giving generously, and
receiving back far more than we could have imagined.
Grounded and nurtured in worship…
Our weekly services provide an opportunity to gather with one another, to hear God’s word
for us and to be nourished to go out into this community – and the world – strengthened to
bear witness to the light of Christ. We also offer special services throughout the year to mark
the church seasons or to reflect on what’s happening in our lives and the world around us.
Some highlights included the World Day of Prayer service hosted by our ACW, a PWRDF
service in October, a moving Remembrance Sunday service with stirring music, and our
ecumenical Good Friday service, where we welcomed the wider community here for worship
and reflection. On All Souls’ Day we gathered in the cemetery and the church to remember
departed loved ones as local writer Christy-Ann Conlin read passages from her two novels.
On Christmas Eve we gathered for Carols Around the Creche at 6:15pm and Carols and
Communion at 9pm. Both services were well-attended, as was our service the last Sunday of
Advent, when our Sunday School children offered an interactive Christmas pageant that we
all enjoyed.
Parishioners also shared their stories of challenge and hope at special services: Harrison
Czapalay encouraged us to “light it up blue” for Autism Awareness, Jordan Waterbury
talked about Sharing Bread in Cuba and being the church outside of the building, and Beverly
McKee helped us to understand the challenges facing indigenous women and families in
Canada’s North. We also welcomed our Diocesan Bishop Ron Cutler, and celebrated
milestones in ministry with our Honourary Assistant Dr. Bruce Matthews (celebrating 50
years of ordained ministry) and Canon Russell Elliott (celebrating 75 years of ordained
ministry). We heard about ministry to some of the most vulnerable people in our
communities, like those at the Waterville Youth Detention Centre. And I was honoured to be
this year’s guest preacher at the annual Kirkin’ O’ the Tartans service at the Covenanter
Church in Grand Pre, when Clan Fyfe was the honoured clan.
There were also quiet, simple services, like a Celtic Eucharist with Anointing for Healing at
the back of the church during Holy Week (and in parishioners’ homes from time to time).
These were moments to offer encouragement and to remind one another that we are not alone
in times of struggle and illness. This year we mourned the loss of beloved parishioners and
we celebrated with those being welcomed through baptism, poignant reminders of our call to
accompany people from the beginning of life until its end. I was also privileged to preside at a
small wedding held in the chancel of the church, as well as a larger marriage ceremony at
Ken-Wo golf course; both were lovely.
Speaking of marriage, this year you can expect to be asked about your views on the marriage
of same-gender couples in the church. Now that a change to the Marriage Canon has passed
first reading at our national church’s General Synod (which I attended as a delegate from our
Diocese), congregations across the country are being asked to talk to one another, and to

listen to diverse points of view as we consider how we are being called to respond to this
possible change in each of our parishes.
Nurturing students and learning and growing in our own faith...
We are grateful for the growing number of Acadia students in our choir and those offering
musical selections from time to time. Thank you to our choir for encouraging and supporting
our younger choristers and musicians, and to our Director of Music and Organist, Michelle,
for your inspiring and humble leadership.
This year we also welcomed a Summer Theological Student from the Atlantic School of
Theology, Ginny Wilmhoff. Ginny hails from Ohio and moved to Halifax about a year ago to
pursue studies towards ordination at AST. Ginny shared in Sunday worship, met
parishioners for coffee and walks on the dykes, visited and shared in outreach services at
nursing homes and assisted-living facilities, and led a small group study on The Book of
Forgiving by Archbishop Desmond and Mpho Tutu for those unable to take part in an
ecumenical Lenten study on the same book. I am grateful for members of her Lay Support
Team, who offered guidance, feedback and encouragement along the way. I was also grateful
to be able to complete the Ministry of Supervision course at AST, which helped me in my role
of mentoring and support. Parish Council recently agreed that we would be Ginny’s
sponsoring parish as she continues the journey towards ordination, which really means we
are recognized as her “home” parish in the Diocese.
This year about twelve of us spent eight weeks studying the Book of Revelation and learned
more about the meaning behind some of its strange symbols, imagery and numbers. Some
parts still left us scratching our heads, but most of us came away feeling reassured in its
message of hope and consolation in difficult times – and not seeing it as a foretelling of the
end of the world – although I’m sure none of us will forget reading about the “Four
Horsemen of the Apocalypse” on the night of the U.S. Presidential election! We hope to plan a
Revelation Sunday this year to share some of what we’ve learned (you’d be surprised to know
how many familiar hymns come from Revelation).
Reaching out beyond our doors...
Over the year, the Parish continued its support of L’Arche, making its first contribution of
$5000 towards a larger commitment of $25,000 over five years to the Building our Dream
campaign to renovate our former Parish Hall. This was thanks to directed donations from
parishioners and the proceeds of a successful Chicken Dinner held in the fall. Thank you to
Dale and Karen Hennigar for their leadership of that event.
As you’ll see in the WAICC report, a major part of our outreach in 2016 found expression in
welcoming and getting to know the Tahina and Ali families from Syria, sponsored under the
umbrella of WAICC. Thank you to our parishioners who met the families at the airport,
donated furniture and household goods, attended the baby shower for the Ali family and
offered gifts, wisdom and kindness, as well as those helping the families to learn English. We
are particularly grateful for Diana Doake, who has become a kind of surrogate grandmother
to the Tahina and Ali children. It’s such a gift to have an Arabic speaker in our midst to help

with translation when needed and to offer love and support to both families as they continue
to make their home among us.
There is so much more that we do to share our resources and care with others. Keep reading
the Annual Report to find out more.
My role as Archdeacon of the Valley Region kept me busy, with five parishes in our region
going through transitions in ordained leadership. My role is to guide them through this
process and to work with new Rectors and Parish leadership as they work to build new
relationships of trust and accountability. Thankfully, things are calming down now and many
parishes are settling into these new relationships. I was also asked to co-facilitate a learning
module on preaching for the Bishop’s School in Central Newfoundland last June. This school
supports layreaders and those discerning a call to ordination as they take on increased
leadership in their parishes.
This year we look ahead to the 200th anniversary of our Parish in 2018. Plans are already
underway and it’s shaping up to be an exciting year. As we prepare to celebrate our rich
history, I would like to express my deep gratitude for all who have gone before us who
shaped and moulded this Parish. It is our privilege to continue their work of love and
dedication, to serve Christ and one another in this beautiful part of the Annapolis Valley. I
would like to especially thank our Parish Wardens: Ron Stuart, Dale Hennigar and Margaret
Coghill, for their support of me and their leadership on our behalf, and for all who contribute
in making this Parish a place of welcome and loving concern for our neighbours near and far.
May God continue to guide and bless us in the year ahead.
In appreciation for all we do and all that we are, individually and collectively,
Sandra Fyfe, Rector
DEACON'S REPORT
I continue to enjoy my role in Pastoral Care which includes mostly home, hospital and
nursing home visits, although my work is slowing down a bit.
I would like to thank the Church Council, Our Rector Archdeacon Sandra Fyfe, our
Honourary Assistant Rev Dr. Bruce Matthews, and the congregation for your encouragement,
support and patience.
I am truly blessed to have you as my parish family.
Respectfully submitted,
Rev. Ann Watson

2016 ANNUAL REPORT
WARDENS’ REPORT
This has been an active and productive year in the life of our parish. Some of the activities to
be mentioned are:
1. The near completion of our SafeR Church Program. This active and hard working
committee under the guidance of Lorraine Street has focused on the organization and duties
of the structure, as well as the duties, of our committees, potential areas of safety concerns,
means of addressing problems and resolutions of any conflict with their procedures for this
resolution if the need should arise. Although this was initiated by requirements of our
insurer, it has more clearly defined the structure and governance in our parish.
2. An enhancement of our music program with thanks to Michelle Boyd, our choir director
and organist, and the initiative of our student choral scholarship program.
3. Active Ways and Means projects with continuation of our usual fundraising, but with new
and successful endeavours such as our Traditional British Cream Tea event and the Chicken
Dinner.
4. Significant activity in outreach giving, with a significant donation to L’Arche for their new
building campaign.
5. Programs of spiritual enrichment such as the Meditation Sessions, Remembrance Services
and our continuing Children’s Sunday School Programs, are of ongoing benefit in the life of
our Parish.
As Wardens working closely with our Rector Sandra, we are humbled and indebted to her
hard working and inspiring leadership on behalf of our parish and the region, with her duties
as Regional Archdeacon. We appreciate and thank our Treasurer, Bob Wrye, for his excellent
management and account keeping of our finances. Our church finds itself in a sound financial
condition due to his guidance with the help of the Finance Committee.
It is a pleasure working with Parish Council and our committees and organizations who
render their services on behalf of our congregation. Thanks to our Parish Secretary, and the
many individuals who act as Servers, Lay Readers, Greeters etc., who give of their time and
efforts to enhance the life of our Parish as we endeavour to serve our community and
endeavour to be an example of a vibrant Christian Community.
Respectfully submitted,

PARISH OF HORTON, ST. JOHN’S ANGLICAN CHURCH
2016 ANNUAL REPORT
MUSIC DIRECTOR'S REPORT
As the choir has enjoyed another year of making music together, we have also benefitted
from the growth of our music program in several ways.
Over the summer, the choir added the Oxford Book of Flexible Anthems to our choral library.
Our year-round choir members offered to purchase their own individual copies, and thanks
to a generous private donation, we were able to purchase a set of eight books for our student
members or any guests to use. We’ve already sung several anthems from it, and are looking
forward to learning more of its contents over the coming year.
With the new resources we have added to our library we have been able to learn a significant
amount of new music over the past year. We have also re-introduced some older favourites
back into our choral repertoire. As a result, the choir has been able to provide anthems for
Sunday services (in addition to our weekly leadership in singing the hymns and liturgical
music) on a regular basis.
The choir also participated in events outside of our 10am Sunday services. This past year the
Wolfville and Area Ecumenical Service for Good Friday was held at St. John’s. We invited
members of the Wolfville Baptist Church Choir to join with us in singing special music. It was
wonderful to have the opportunity to collaborate with another choir, and to be part of such a
moving community service.
In December we hosted our second Cookies & Carols for the community. Planning this event is
a considerable challenge: December is such a busy month for everyone, but in order to have
our students participate, with their exam schedules and holiday departures we are left with
an extremely limited selection of dates on which this event can happen. Logistical challenges
aside, we thoroughly enjoyed singing Christmas carols together. Many thanks go to all those
who contributed treats for our time of fellowship afterward.
A highlight of this past year has been the growth of student participants in our music
program. We have now had several music students join us for Sunday services to provide
special music in the form of a solo and/or adding instrumental accompaniment to a choir
anthem and the hymns (see list of students below). After bidding farewell to our students in
April for the University’s summer break, we were delighted to have Tristan Best, Rebecca
Fairless, and Patrick Madden join the choir for May and June. Rebecca also filled in for me as
organist on the Sundays I was away over the summer. In September we welcomed back with
open arms our choral scholars, Ellen Torrie and Ryan Myers, as well as three new choir
members: Margaret Finlay, Lauren MacKinnon, and Alexa Munroe-Choquette. These singers,
along with several other students who have offered to sing with the choir when available,
have formed a chamber choir, which has been singing at Sunday services about once a month
since September. The chamber choir sang at Cookies & Carols and also participated in the
Bridgewater Fire Department Band’s community Christmas concert, held at Central United
Church in Lunenburg.

Recognizing the valuable contribution of both talent and energy these students have brought
to our music program, since this fall we have begun to work towards building our Choral
Scholar Program. With the generous support of those who have contributed to this growing
fund, we have been able to continue to offer honorariums to support our Choral Scholars,
Ellen and Ryan, as well as provide much smaller honorariums to the other musicians who
have helped out with the choir to acknowledge our appreciation of their time and energy. I
think that we as a congregation should take pride in our commitment to supporting student
outreach as we continue to develop our Choral Scholar Program.
Of course, one side effect of so many students singing with us is that some Sundays we have
a challenge to find enough gowns for everyone (some of the girls end up wearing child-size
surplices!). As we look toward the future and our upcoming 200th anniversary celebration, we
might consider the revitalization of our choir’s apparel as well as the revitalization of our
electric piano (which has a broken pedal) as long-term goals.
This September marked the one-year anniversary of my appointment as Director of Music. It
has been a thoroughly positive experience, and I am happy to have found a spiritual home at
St. John’s. I look forward to rehearsing with my choir every week, and we, in turn, look
forward to another year of fellowship and music-making.
Respectfully submitted,
Michelle Boyd
WOLFVILLE AREA INTER-CHURCH COUNCIL REPORT (WAICC)
The Wolfville Area Interchurch Council continues to bear witness to the strength of a unified
Christian presence in our communities. Dedicated representatives from area churches meet
regularly to share in prayer and outreach, mutual support and encouragement, and education
and worship.

PARISH OF HORTON, ST. JOHN’S ANGLICAN CHURCH
2016 ANNUAL REPORT
The highlight for WAICC this past year was welcoming two Syrian families. The Tahina
family (Hussam, Isheh and their four children: Mahmoud, Mayar, Islam and Molhem)
arrived in February. The Ali family (Youssef, Faten and their three children: Fatima, Rayan
and Kamal) arrived in June. In October, Faten gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, Mohammed.
We were blessed to host a baby shower at St. John’s in early September with folks from area
churches and the wider community attending to offer their love and support (and some
practical gifts as well!). Preparing for the arrival of both families and spending time with
them has been – and continues to be – a labour of love for our volunteers, including many
from St. John’s, who give generously of their time and resources. In the prayer of St. Francis,
we say that “it is in giving that we receive” and this has certainly been the case for those
involved with the Tahina and Ali families.
This February, the Tahina family will reach “month 13,” and the Refugee Support Network’s
financial commitment to them will have been officially met. We will continue to support them
as we are able, through funds remaining in the Refugee Sponsorship account currently held
by WAICC. Due to special medical needs for baby Mohammed the Ali family has been
accepted into a federal government program that provides financial assistance for three years,
rather than one. This will allow them additional time to continue learning English while
caring for their young family. We are grateful for all that our parishioners have contributed in
time, talents and treasure (including $2093 in donations) to ensure the successful settlement
of the Tahina and Ali families in our area. They are a blessing to us as we hope we are to
them!
We also continue to be blessed as we worship ecumenically throughout the year:
* Our ecumenical Week of Prayer for Christian Unity service was held at Acadia’s Manning
Memorial Chapel on January 24th. The theme was “Salt of the Earth” using resources from
Christian churches in Latvia, with the message offered by Dr. Barry Morrison, Wolfville
Baptist Church. The service was followed by a potluck supper.
* Threatening weather forced us inside for most of our annual Walk with the Cross on Good
Friday. Fortunately we were prepared, with large photographs of our planned community
stops posted around the gathering space. These were combined with thoughtful reflections
offered by representatives of WAICC member organizations.
* The ecumenical Good Friday service was hosted by our parish this year, involving members
of the L’Arche Homefires community. They lovingly created the hill at Golgotha and a
garden tomb while the account of our Lord’s Passion was read. We also took time to reflect
on how we are kind to each other, with those attending offering their contributions on index
cards, which we then hung on the walls of our church as a reminder. L’Arche offered small,
clay thumbprint crosses to all at the end of the service.
* The Annual University Advent Service at Convocation Hall on November 27th featured a
series of Advent Lessons and Carols, combined with moving musical selections offered by the
Chapel Choir.

2016 ANNUAL REPORT
* The Longest Night Service was hosted by Orchard Valley United Church in New Minas to
offer comfort and hope to those who find the Christmas season difficult.
During Lent we offered an ecumenical study on The Book of Forgiving by Archbishop
Desmond and Mpho Tutu. Two options were offered: an afternoon session at St. John’s and
an evening session at Wolfville Baptist. About 25 people attended weekly.
In May, WAICC welcomed Mayor Jeff Cantwell to offer reflections at the AGM, and our
Rector was elected Vice-President of WAICC, a two-year position, with the intention of
assuming the role of President in May, 2019. In this year, the WAICC Executive spent
significant time considering whether to recommend to the members that WAICC seek to
become an incorporated organization. At a Special General Meeting of the members held in
November 2016, the member churches approved this step. The application for incorporation
is currently being prepared and will be submitted in 2017.
The Food Bank, now in its tenth year, served about 100 families a month in 2016, and
coordinated the packing and distribution of close to 160 Christmas hampers. This is possible
because of the countless hours offered by volunteers, many from St. John’s. Financial support
is also offered, as well as monthly donations of food. St. John’s also coordinates an annual
donation of carrots for the Christmas hampers and this past year our parishioners contributed
$145.65 through the “gravy boat” to purchase turkeys as well. Of course, food isn’t all “The
Food Bank” provides; volunteers take time to have conversations with clients and directs
them to supports and services in the community. Through these relationships Food Bank
volunteers help families to access government programs, or medical and dental services, and
expresses kindness and care.
Through the Special Needs/Emergency Assistance Fund, WAICC also offers financial
support to those who need help paying rent, or their electricity, oil, water, medical or other
bills. This goes a long way in helping people to get back on their feet and reminds them that
members of their community care about their wellbeing. Another important area of outreach
(shared by WAICC and the St. Vincent de Paul Society) is providing school supplies and/or
school fees for elementary and high school students in our area. St. John’s always gives
generously to this initiative, contributing $462 last year. WAICC also provides much-needed
financial support to breakfast programs in each of our area schools, and supports lunch
programs in some.
As you can see, we are part of a generous and loving community. Thank you for your
commitment, care and contributions over the past year.

PRIMATE’S WORLD RELIEF & DEVELOPMENT FUND (PWRDF)
The PWRDF, the Anglican Church of Canada’s agency for sustainable development, relief,
refugees and global justice strives to be part of the outreach ministry of every Canadian
Anglican parish. As an instrument of faith, PWRDF gives us an opportunity to learn about
and support work directed towards food security, health care, emergency relief, microfinance, human rights, justice, peace--in short, the integrity of God’s creation. Though
relatively small, the Primate’s Fund can operate efficiently through close ties with local
partners around the world, and by joining with broad church alliances for emergency work.
In 2016 over one million men, women and children in 16 countries benefited from a wide
range of PWRDF projects.
As in previous years, our congregation supported the PWRDF’s work very generously. In
2016 through the envelope system, special appeals and projects, we raised $ 7,175.00* and
sent another $520 to PWRDF directly through the sale of PWRDF Christmas cards. (*This
figure does not include gifts sent directly to the national office in response to online
emergencies campaigns or for memorial gifts.) Of the total amount, $2,545.00 was given
through envelope offerings to support of PWRDF’s ongoing work. In addition, parishioners
responded to special appeals for emergency relief. Gifts totalling $1,425 were made after the
devastating Fort McMurray Wildfires last May, where PWRDF’s emphasis is working through
the Dioceses on long-term reconstruction. In October Hurricane Matthew was particularly
destructive in Haiti, where PWRDF has ongoing commitments, and we raised $1,050 for this
latest emergency affecting 1.4 million people. In past years, we have responded to
humanitarian appeals for Syrian and other refugees. Continuing the 2015 Syrian Emergency
Relief effort to assist people displaced within Syria and living as refugees in surrounding
countries (matched by the Government until Feb.29/16), we sent a further $240 to this
campaign. Many parishioners are happy to have found an immediate outlet for their longtime concern about the refugee crisis through helping with the sponsorship of two Syrian
families (under WAICC’s umbrella) who arrived in Wolfville in 2016.
PWRDF’s emphasis on food security continued in 2016, year 3 of the “Fred Says” Food Security
Campaign. PWRDF’s excellent resource materials allowed for occasional updates about
principles of food security and innovative projects in many parts of Africa, the Caribbean and
Asia. Another key concern in recent years has been to promote better health for mothers,
newborns and young children through the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Program
(MNCH), which was the focus for the annual PWRDF service on Oct. 23. PWRDF supports
many innovative, life-saving, grass-roots projects, such as those in Mozambique, Burundi,
Rwanda, Tanzania (matched 6:1 by Global Affairs Canada), and also works with indigenous
communities in the Americas (Mexico, Peru and Canada). Our speaker on Oct. 23 was
parishioner Beverly McKee, who has worked as a nurse practitioner in remote indigenous
communities in Canada’s North. She spoke compellingly about the impact of isolation,
poverty and inadequate housing and infrastructure, and the importance of better support for
maternal and infant/child health and needed innovations such as integrating indigenous
midwifery into the formal healthcare system. We decided to direct PWRDF donations from

Oct. 30 to the end of November towards the theme of maternal and child health in Canada’s
North. This initiative raised $1,915, including $230 from the ongoing Enough for All Soup-in-aBag project. An additional gift of $85 early in 2017 allowed St. John’s to send a total of $2,000
to PWRDF’s Canadian Indigenous Program in support of MNCH.
Bishop Sue Moxley has called PWRDF “Love in Action.” THANK YOU for your loving,
generous and prayerful support as we build a truly just, healthy and peaceful world. Check

Cream Tea/Art and Craft Show revenue $1274.35 expenses 36.40
On Saturday, August 13 a Traditional British Cream Tea was held at St. John’s Church
Wolfville on the lawn, and an Art and Craft Show and Sale was held at the back of the
Church. The event was a great success. Over 80 guests were served tasty cucumber and cream
cheese sandwiches followed by homemade scones with Devonshire cream and jam. More
people attended the Tea than we had initially planned for, and caused us to run out of food.
At our Post Tea Meeting all the good and problem things were discussed at length and we
will adjust for next year. Approximately $1285.00 was raised.

THE PROPERTY COMMITTEE
In the spring of 2016, under the direction of the Wardens, a work party was organized to
scrape and paint the Rectory barn. In addition, all of the growth which had come up around
the foundations was cut away or dug out. While not in tip top condition, the barn, with this
work and the roof put on in 2015, is now in shape to withstand further deterioration.
In early fall a survey of the exterior of the church and rectory was made. On the former, only
minor work was needed – scraping, touch-up painting and cleaning of spots around the
building including the belfry. On the rectory, some more extensive work was required. A lot
of shingles had been torn off the roof in a storm; luckily there was no leaking. Some repair
work was required in the main bathroom. Areas of clapboard in the front and back, and some
of the drip rail need replacement, but this has been left until spring. I would like to thank
Vicki Harris for removing clusters of maples which grew up at the front corner of the rectory
and in the front lawn, and for her extensive work on the hedge.
Both church and rectory are in good condition overall as a result of the extensive work
undertaken over the last twelve years. It is important that we are conscientious about doing
yearly inspection and maintenance so that we identify and correct problems before they
become large ones.

able to make a number of monetary donations of $100 to the following charitable
organizations: NS ACW Board; Chrysalis House; Open Arms; Kairos (Prison Ministry);
L’Arche; SMILE; Flower Cart. We as well provided refreshments for four funerals during the
year.
We were pleased to host our Christmas Coffee Party at the end of November. Thanks again to
Vicki Harris for arranging and managing the making of the Christmas puddings, and to the
ladies who participated in the preparation and steaming of the puddings. Dianne Thorpe and
Camille Herbin were co-convenors for this very successful fund raiser along with the women
of the church. This event made it possible to donate $4,002.14 to our church. The ACW also
hosted a luncheon for Diana Patterson in August for the Hospice Foundation Information
Session which raised $150.00 for us. We did a St.Patrick’s Day Tea at the Elms and supplied a
soup luncheon in December for the visit of the Bishop. The World Day of Prayer Service was
held in our church in March and the country selected was Cuba. A combined Evensong
Service was held in April for Sanctuary Guild and ACW with our Rector as speaker.
We ended the year in June with a luncheon at the Blomidon Inn with guests Dot Hancock and
Ginny Wilmhoff. Again the executive would like to thank all those who helped during the
year including Dot Hancock who gives us a willing hand. None of this would have been
possible without the support of all the women in the church.

REPORT OF THE ST. JOHN'S SIDESPEOPLE
I want to thank each and every person that served as either a greeter or as a counter. The first
impression people get of St. John’s Anglican Church, Parish of Horton is the greeting they
receive from our sidespeople, and I believe that impression is overwhelmingly positive. The
friendly and warm welcome goes a long way to making a newcomer feel at home and
consider making us their spiritual family.
We are looking for volunteers to greet people and also for counters. If you are interested,
please, see me or drop me an email.
We made a significant change in the way collection was counted during 2016 and we will be
revisiting this in the very near future. We went to direct deposit at the bank in 2012, making
the accuracy of the counters more important, since once the money is in the bank, it is
impossible to get information on an individual donation.
Only cheques made out to St. John’s Anglican Church can be processed. Any cheques made
out to others have to be returned, or mailed to them, resulting in delays.
In order to make the tracking of donations to various donor accounts, it is essential that
parishioners mark special requests on the envelope rather than on the cheque. The counters
try to transfer the information if it is not marked on the envelope, but this takes additional
time.
If possible, parishioners are encouraged to use PAR donations. This is a pre-authorized direct
transfer to the Church from your bank. For details please contact Linda Barkhouse or myself.
Respectfully,
Murray Phillips, Chairman of Sidespeople

SafeR CHURCH WORKING GROUP
The purpose and goal of SafeR Church is to create, restore, build, nourish, and sustain
communities of trust and trustworthy communities in our parishes and diocese--to create
SafeR Church for everyone, by taking active measures to prevent and respond to the threat of
all forms of abuse--sexual, physical, spiritual, psychological, emotional, etc., including
bullying and harassment--committed by anyone involved in our parishes and diocese--children, youth, adults, seniors, men, women, laypeople, and clergy; committed against
anyone involved in our parishes and diocese--children, youth, adults, seniors, men, women,
laypeople, and clergy.
Like every other parish in the Diocese, St. John's has been working on its SafeR Church Plan.
In 2016, the SafeR Church Working Group -- Helen Ackermann, Margaret Coghill, Jim
Nelson, and Lorraine Street -- continued to work on the major pieces of the Plan, bringing
recommendations to Parish Council for SafeR Church Measures related to parish ministries
and governance. The Working Group will end its work in the winter of 2017, bringing its final
recommendations and handing over the initial SafeR Church Plan to Parish Council, which is
required, under the terms of our insurance, to assign responsibility for oversight,
maintenance, review, and updating of the Plan to other individuals and/or committees.
The Working Group would like to thank the Rector, Wardens, Parish Council members,
and many other members of the Parish who have participated in this work.

PASTORAL CARE
Despite the absence of a formal committee, lots of pastoral care activities continued at St.
John’s in 2016.
Following up on research conducted by Sue Barthos as part of the Socks from St. John’s
project last year, the Parish continued the “Special Friends” project matching parish
volunteers with students at Gaspereau Valley Elementary School. Eight members of our
parish are working with students at GVES.
Once again in 2016, St. John’s members generously supported WAICC’s annual school
supplies campaign, providing students in Wolfville and area with backpacks, binders, and
other supplies at the beginning of the new school year.
For the second year in a row, our parish took on the task of providing food for one of the six
Kairos Prison Marathons held at Springhill Institution every year. (The Marathon is not a
race: it is a two-day gathering of volunteers and prisoners, held in the chapel at Springhill; a
time when everyone learns that we are “more alike than we are different,” to quote the
Reverend Charlie Taylor, founder of the Marathons almost fifty years ago. Then, at the
beginning of Restorative Justice Week 2016, we were honoured to have the Reverend Mike
Veneema, Chaplain at the Nova Scotia Youth Facility, preach at both our Sunday Eucharist
services. As per usual, members of the parish quickly took gift item tags from our Waterville
“tree” and returned a large number of gifts that were delivered to the Facility. A number of
parishioners travelled there to participate in a sing along Christmas service that unfortunately
had to be cancelled at short notice. Thanks to Pat Moore, Helen Ackermann, Elizabeth Biggs,
and Elaine Slauenwhite for offering to participate and making the trip there.
Our Christmas gifts to friends of the parish were beautiful Christmas napkins, hand-made by
Debbie MacDonald, complete with wooden napkin rings decorated by the children of our
Sunday School, and a card. Thanks to Debbie and Gillian and the children at Sunday School,
and to those who delivered the gifts—Reverend Sandra Fyfe, Reverend Ann Watson, Helen
Henderson, Elizabeth Browne, and Patsy and Bill Clothier. Also for Christmas, members of
the parish donated cash for turkeys and carrots for the Christmas food hampers distributed
by the Wolfville Food Bank.
Parish visiting continued in 2016 with regular visitors including, Pat Moore, Helen
Ackermann, Helen Whidden, Libby Wells, Patsy Clothier, MaryLynne Bruce, Dale
Hennigar, Karen Hennigar, Ron Stuart (hospital visiting) and Helen Henderson, as well as
the Reverend Sandra Fyfe and the Reverend Ann Watson. We are happy to welcome
additional parishioners as Friendly Visitors. To find out more, talk to one of our visitors or
our Rector, Sandra. A number of visitors participated in an education session in Bridgetown
in the spring of 2016, and plans are underway to hold similar sessions at St. John’s and/or
with other parishes in our region.

important aspect of our Parish life. Many thanks to those who share so willingly and joyfully

ST. ANNE’S CAMP 2016 Camping Year
St. Anne’s camp was established in the summer of 1948. It has been in continuous use every
summer since its opening. It receives financial support from the various parishes in the
region. This is its 68th year.
The camping season typically runs from early June until mid September, a period of 14
weeks. During the 2016 camper season eleven groups rented the camp for a total of 1,339
camper days. The smallest group was 42 camper days; the largest was 420 camper days.
The camp is always in need of rejuvenation. Each year something needs to be repaired or
replaced.
The existing drinking water system has been in place since 1997. Through the summer we
have replaced worn and weathered pieces and landscaped the area around the well to ensure
ground water is directed away from well. Before the next camping season we will replace the
water storage reservoir over the kitchen with a newer unit.
The sink in the kitchen will be replaced with a newer stainless steel unit.
The pantry room off kitchen has been removed and is being replaced with a larger one that
will allow all the refrigerators to be located in the pantry along the same wall, making the
kitchen more efficient.
We have applied for a grant to cover half of the replacement cost.
There is a rough path around the lake plus other rough overgrown paths that connect with
lumber roads on the old Bowater Mersey forested lands, which surround the camp. This land
is now crown land. We will be entering into discussions with the Nova Scotia Department of
Forestry. The aim of the discussions is to obtain permission to upgrade these trails to most
weather status.

ST. JOHN'S SUNDAY SCHOOL REPORT
The Sunday School program at St. John’s is active during the school calendar year, from
September until early June, at the 10am service.
Currently we are following the curriculum set forth by Sparkhouse, called Holy Moly. This
set curriculum features both Old and New Testament stories for the children that are
delivered in a way that is approachable, fun and memorable.
Generally Sunday School classes range in attendance from 4 to 11 children each week. We
come together in the sunroom and create a circle by the couch. We talk a bit about our week
and then Mrs. Mainguy, the teacher for the lessons, will introduce the story and its characters.
Then there is a DVD to play the story, which is an animated short about that given
foundational Bible story. Following the video the class will generally talk about the video, to
better understand what the “teachable moment” in that particular story is/was and how it is
relatable to everyday life.
Then there is an accompanying story book that retells the same story that was featured in the
video. After the story we work on a craft and/or colour sheet and/or crossword/wordsearch
that aligns with the Bible story.
This will generally take us into communion and following communion we will generally read
the Bible verse for that week, and finish with a closing prayer before the choir comes through.
Sunday School will be looking into the Whirl! Curriculum from Sparkhouse next.

FINANCE COMMITTEE REPORT
We had a successful 2016 ending the year with a small surplus of $1,525.77, which was much
better than we anticipated. In addition we met the first year of our five year $25,000
commitment to L’Arche with a $5,000 donation and established a small reserve for 2017. We
also have created a reserve for the very successful Choral Scholar Bursary Program and
increased our reserve for Major Repair expenses. Increased giving from you played a large
part in this success. As usual we were also fortunate to continue to receive generous support
from the both the ACW, our Ways and Means Committee and a large donation from a local
charitable foundation. I would be remiss if I did not mention that a milder winter and the
price of oil helped as well.
In reviewing our financial situation the Finance Committee feels that we are in a very strong
financial position. Our cash balance and our investment portfolio are both very positive. We
have achieved this from your generous support and being careful with our expenses. That
having been said, we should not lose sight of the fact that we continue to be active supporters
of a number of charitable activities both at home and abroad and also to provide immediate
assistance to people in need. Apart from the major renovation to the interior of the Church,
both the Church and Rectory properties have been kept up to date and are in excellent
condition. We believe that St. John’s is an active and vibrant Church and will continue to be
so for many years to come.
I would like to thank our financial team of Robert Wrye and Linda Barkhouse for their work
this past year. Finally I want to thank all of you for your continuing generous support to both
the ongoing operation of the church and the many projects that we support.
