Volume 2, Issue 5 - April 2017 Celebrating 100 Years 2 1917 Pauline Farra, Head of Social Studies and author of Educating Women of Integrity: The Centennial History of Epsom Girls Grammar School, takes delivery of the very first copy of the book. Principal Lorraine Pound with former Principal Gae Griffiths, author Pauline Farra and Centenary Prefects Connolly Wilkins and Evelyn Charlesworth cutting the cake at the Centenary official opening and Book Launch on Wednesday night. Dear parents, caregivers and students Pauline Farra, pictured above, Head of Social Studies, a passionate teacher of History, a New Zealand history expert and a published author on local New Zealand history has researched and written the School’s centennial history. This book is a wonderful testament to the research and scholarship - and to the care - that Pauline has put into this project; to her ability to synthesise the multifarious experiences and vast array of changes over the course of a century as this school has developed and evolved to its 100 year point. On Wednesday at the Book Launch the audience delighted in hearing from Pauline and from four past principals - Gae Griffiths, Verna Dowdle, Margaret Bendall and Madeline Gunn. Epsom Girls Grammar School has its origins in the very English grammar school tradition and it is also a school deeply rooted in Aotearoa New Zealand. I would like to thank the Kapa Haka Group and Kotahitanga representatives for their part in making the Centenary Official Opening and Book Launch such a wonderful occasion. Last night was the Opening of the Incubate Art Show featuring more than 400 works from students, alumnae staff and former staff. The show will be open throughout the weekend and I recommend it as an opportunity to view and purchase outstanding art from emerging and established artists. I would like to thank Marté Szirmay especially for the limited edition bronzes made especially for the centenary. This morning we have had 300 alumnae at school for Morning Memories - a beautiful morning tea complete with vintage crockery and cake stands. It was lovely to see so many people sharing their memories of Epsom. We also have had school tours all day, and these will continue tomorrow. Tomorrow the Sports Extravaganza starts at 10am - Football 10am - 11.30am (Field 1), Netball 11.30am - 12.30pm (Joyce Fisher Sports Centre), Lacrosse 1pm 2pm (Field 1). Entry to this event is free. The students are sure that they will win – the Old Girls are equally sure that it will be them on the winning side - so come along to support EGGS past and present. There is also the Epsom House Brunch tomorrow at 10.00am. Please note there will be no parking available onsite. 017 Coming up in Week 11.... This evening with Margaret Thorsborne will explore the challenges parents face when trying to maintain standards and expectations whilst preserving the relationships with their children. EGGS uses restorative practice that encourages students to think more broadly about the impact of their decisions and behaviours on others. This approach moves away from traditional thinking around punitive sanctions that actually do very little to develop thoughtfulness. Approved by the Ministry of Education and with evidence to show that these approaches actually make a difference, the workshop will explore how the same principles and practices are equally effective at home. CURRICULUM NEWS English On Monday 20 March, 425 Year 10 English students had the privilege of attending a school’s matinee performance of Much Ado About Nothing at the Pop Up Globe theatre. The Ellerslie Racecourse provided the perfect venue and the sun shone upon us. Most students got to experience half of the play as groundlings, meaning that they stood in ‘the pit’ as pictured and were close to, and sometimes involved in, the action. These students particularly enjoyed their interactions with the real live dog who was part of the cast. The experience definitely enriched the study of Shakespeare and his theatre so integral to all our English courses, and students surveyed later commented on the strength of the acting, the clever way a Pasifika context had been integrated into the original play, and the fun of interacting with the performers. Although one student noted, ‘it would have been better if it hadn’t been in old English,’ the experience proves that 400 years on, Shakespeare still merits his place here at EGGS. Year 13 Summit - Unicorns and Vacuum Cleaners Next term (Tuesday 16th May 2017) we will be hosting an exciting event for all Year 13 students. The Year 13 Summit is a day long event for students and will feature a range of presentations, workshops and a panel discussion from guest speakers including Labour Deputy Leader, Jacinda Ardern, EGGS Alumnae and a range of EGGS Staff members. The focus of the Year 13 Summit is centred around the transition that our students are about to make as they enter a new phase of their lives in 2018. As a school we are wanting to ensure that our students feel equipped with the skills required to be successful, to dream big, to achieve their goals and to inspire others. For many of our students this next step in their lives will be taken in the form of a tertiary education pathway, however, the Year 13 Summit has been structured in a way to ensure that it is relevant to all of our students and supportive of any pathway or life-step they choose to pursue next year. The title of the Year 13 Summit, ‘Unicorns and Vacuum Cleaners’, has been fabricated in a style that references the DADA Art Movement from the 1960s; whilst sounding somewhat nonsensical, it represents the idea and importance of dreaming big in life but balancing this with a practical and scaffolded plan in order to make dreams a reality.
