How to Do a Science Fair Project… Sign me up! Step One: Find a Topic! This is the MOST difficult Step. Where can I get ideas? -Books, Magazines -Internet [www.scifaircentral.com] -Teacher, Parents, Friends IMPORTANT: Topic MUST be interesting to you! Step 2. Formulate your problem: This must be in the form of a question. “Does X affect Y?” Example: “Does the color of an M&M candy affect how fast it will melt?” Step 3. Write your Hypothesis! There is NO Effect Null Hypothesis. The color of an M&M candy will NOT affect how fast it will melt. There is AN Effect Alternate Hypothesis. The color of an M&M candy has an effect on how fast it will melt. Step 4. Perform an Experiment! Make a LOT of trials. Do your experiment not only ONCE, nor TWICE, but MANY TIMES over! Write your steps CLEARLY! Collect your DATA into a TABLE. HAVE many samples! [Lots of M&M’s!] Hint! Hint! Hint! Winning projects almost always contain quantifiable DATA [numbers]! Judges love to see NUMBERS inside your DATA Table! Step 5. Kick it up a Notch! Make graphs and charts! Take pictures! Keep a journal! Ask experts [your teacher included]!
