Welcome Back and
Happy New Year!
May 2014 bring all of us Peace, Light and
Hope.
Holy Father, God of our yesterdays, our
today, and our tomorrows. We praise You
for Your unequalled greatness.Thank You
for the year behind us and for the year
ahead. Help us in your new year, Father,
to fret less and laugh more. To teach our
children to laugh by laughing with them. To
teach others to love by loving them. Knowing, when Love came to the stable in Bethlehem, He came for us. So that Love could
be with us, and we could know You. That
we could share Love with others. Thank
You for another new year and for new
chances every day. We pray for peace, for
light, and for hope, that we might spread
them to others. We accept Your gift of a
new year and we rejoice in what's ahead,
depending on You to help us do exactly
what You want. Amen.
They Will Know We are
Christians by Our Love
Thanks to the generosity and compassion
of the entire school community, we successfully made Christmas 2013 a very
special one for 4 families in our school.
One large box of groceries (per family),
along with toys and gift cards were delivered on December 19th to these very special families. Thank you!

Student Safety
A) To ensure the safety of everyone concerned, please be reminded that all adults
may not be in the school building without
reporting to or signing in at the office. This
includes, but not is not limited to:
(parents/caregivers,guests,board employees,contractors...etc.) We know you share
our concern for student safety and well
being at all times.
B) There still are quite a number of students who are consistently late for school.
The expectation is that students will be in
the yard between 8:10 am and 8:30 am. A
student who is late (on average) 10
mins. a day, 3 times a week, is being
denied 1200 minutes of instructional
time a year. This equates to approximately 4 total school days of instructional time. As well, students who are late
are missing out on morning routines, important announcements and disrupt programming. Students who miss a great deal
of instructional time are certain to encounter difficulty in keeping up with their school
work. We hope that you will work with us to
help your child(ren) learn the value of
punctuality.
C) With the colder weather here, please
keep the following items in mind:
*In the event of a snowstorm, please do
not call the school to see if it is open. It is
very rare for schools to close. Listen to

Homework
Report Cards will be coming home to families in mid February. A large component of
a student’s success is the regular and daily
completion of homework. When children
complete homework, they consolidate and
reinforce the learning from in-school experiences in a practical and meaningful way.
Homework is a planned and purposeful
activity that is linked to the The Ontario
Curriculum Learning Expectations, Learning Skills, and Ministry of Education Reporting Guidelines, and the Ministry of Education Curriculum Guidelines. Below you
will find Time Guidelines for homework.
For a complete detailed Homework Guideline, link on to our TCDSB website at
www.tcdsb.org. You will find the guidelines
under the “Student Link.”

As communicated to families earlier in
the year, only one formal parent teacher
interview is scheduled for this year;
which was in November. Despite this,
parents are encouraged to contact their
child’s teacher at any time should they
ever want to address the needs of their
children. Communication between parents and teachers about student
achievement should be ongoing and is
not limited to formal reporting periods.

Book Fair
WE DID IT!!!! This year’s book fair surpassed its goal of $4000 and raised
$4,652.80. Thank you to all the families
who visited our book fair during parent
teacher interviews and for sharing in our
celebration of books. The total commission made of $2,193.76 will allow us to
add new materials and resources to update and maintain our Library books. We
also added new books to our Library with
our first Adopt A Book Program. Parents,
teachers, and students generously donated exciting new books to be enjoyed by
our students. A special thank you to this

Virtue of the Month/Pride
Award Winners
Each month, we gather as a school community to celebrate student success. Congratulations to the students who consistently displayed the virtue of Charity in
December and Courage in January.
Congratulations also to the students who
received pride awards for Independent
Work in in December and Initiative in
January. Recipients will have their names
posted on the bulletin board in the main
floor hallway. Parents/Caregivers are always welcome to join us at this assembly.
Check our monthly calendars for dates
and times.
Lego Club
The Lego Club is off to a great start! Students in grades 1 to 6 apply their creative
thinking and problem solving skills to construct patterns and graphs using Lego
blocks. The students work collaboratively
to create and extend patterns and transfer
surveyed data into three dimensional
models. Students are able to use a traditional toy in a novel way.
Math Is Cool
Boys Volleyball
Below, Ms. Viselli’s grade 3 students are
playing a Mathematics game that focuses
on learning and understanding time. Students are playing in small groups to match
a time written in words with the digital and
analog times. The grade three students
really enjoy playing math games because
it actively engages them in their learning.
Winning the game is directly related to
understanding the mathematical concept
taught. When playing a game, the children
do not mind repeating certain facts over
and over again because they are having
fun!
BAND AID
We the students of the band felt very privileged and honoured to be able to have
played for our school at Christmas time.
Being able to be in the school band is an
opportunity to have fun, and to learn new
things. It was nice to see the smiles on the
audience's faces, and to hear their applause was brightening. Some were even
singing along when we were performing
Jingle Bells and Feliz Navidad. Over all,
the greatest part of being in the school
band is preforming for others.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2014 TO THE FAMILIES OF ST. JEROME SCHOOL!
Our chocolate fundraiser was a grand
success! We raised approximately
$9,500. Thank you for your hard work
and dedication. We do have quite a few
students with outstanding chocolates and
monies. We kindly ask that you return
any outstanding chocolates and monies
ASAP so we could balance our books.
GOOD NEWS! We will be purchasing
new laptops/desktops for the library for
our students. CSAC has allocated $10
per student to help reduce the cost for
field trips. This is being offered to all
students. Some teachers have already
applied this reduction to their trips. We
look forward to many more fun and educational activities as we begin this year.
We will be hosting a Valentine’s Dance.
On February 14th. A letter will be sent
home with more information.Once again,
thank you for your continued support and
have a blessed year!
Next School Council meeting: February 19th, 7 pm. All are welcome to attend!
Together we WILL make a difference!
Ashley Sawh (CSAC Chair)
On Monday January 20, 2014 scientist
Craig Douglas came to Mr. Venditti’ s
grade 5 class to teach us about Force
and Structures. There was a group challenge to construct a tower out of newspaper that would withstand all natural elements like wind and movement. We also
learned about gravity and how it acts on
everything in the same way. Then we
had a 30 min. group challenge where we
made a structure to hold textbooks. The
students had fun. It was a great day.

Numeracy and Literacy
at Home
January 27th is Family Literacy Day in
Canada. Story telling is a fun activity that
the whole family can enjoy and help improve their child’s language base which
makes learning to read easier. Story telling can include folktales, fairy tales,
myths or traditions. Children love to hear
about stories when they or their parents
were younger. Story telling can be done
at anytime there is an opportunity: bedtime, mealtime, long drives, walks to the
park. For more great Family Literacy tips
and ideas, visit abclifeliteracy.ca

that our school is recycling properly and
doing their best to save energy! We are
happy to announce that our school is
doing a very good job at conserving energy! Almost all classes remember to
turn off the lights when leaving a room
and keep the computer monitors off
when not in use. An area of focus for the
upcoming term is to try our best to place
only recyclables into the recycling bins
and keep garbage to a minimum. Remember, if we all work together we can
achieve greatness!
Lent
As we approach the season of Lent, we
learn more about Jesus’ life on earth
through our prayers and liturgical celebrations. We are reminded that the idea
of Lent is the increase of one’s spirituality. It is a time that we must reflect not
only upon ourselves, but others as well.
During Lent, we will remind and encourage our students to live as Children of
the Light; performing actions which are
good, just and true. For your convenience, also in this package is a Children
of Lent activity sheet that families can
complete together and make the Lenten
season especially meaningful.
