Fourth Sunday of Advent Page 2 Fourth Sunday of Advent December 22, 2013 They shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.” — Matthew 1:23 EMMANUEL To name someone or something means that we have a relationship with that entity. Family names identify us with our heritage; nicknames denote familiarity or a special bond. In the Old Testament, the meaning of a name ran deep. It identified one’s mission, even one’s very being. The amazing name “Emmanuel” was first uttered by Isaiah as he described to the frightened King Ahaz the promised one who would come to redeem the people. Emmanuel is not a frightening philosophical name, such as Omnipotent, Omniscient, Almighty. It does not connote distance and transcendence. It does not generate reverential fear. The name Emmanuel implies closeness and intimacy and compassion. Emmanuel is the name given to the one who is coming. It means “God is with us.” God is entrusted to the care of a virgin, who will bear this child. Only God would be so compassionate to draw so near, to be so available and vulnerable. Only God could love this well. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. In 1925 the New York World celebrated the birth of Lincoln with a cartoon that has become a classic. Two farmers are pictured talking over a fence. One asks, "Anything new happening lately?" The other responds, "Nothing much, except a baby was born over at Tom Lincoln's." The same probably happened at Bethlehem two thousand years ago. Two shepherds talking, "Anything new happen around here?" "Naw, just a baby down in the stable. Nothing much happens around here." To the eyes of faith and in the eyes of our children something beautiful happens, Christ is born. Each child brings a unique birth of Christ. Let us share the stories of the Holy Family, the stable, the star and the swaddling clothes and then stand back and let the children tell us the story. EVERGREEN A friend shared with me this American Indian story about the creation of trees . . .after a contest the Great Mystery gave to each tree the gift which would be most useful to each species. The contest consisted of being able to stay awake the longest. After seven days the Great Mystery returned to find only the spruce, the cedar, the pine, the fir, the laurel and the holly still awake. "Because you have great endurance you shall have the gift of remaining green forever. Even in the harshest of winters you will be able to shelter all your sisters and brothers in creation." This tale tells the Advent Story about staying awake and being alert, of greenness in the midst of barrenness, being life-giving in harsh situations. The Lord's Presence helps us to become life-giving and to give shelter to others. Our Christmas trees are evergreen. They call out to us to give shelter and protection to all of God's creation. Evergreen also means our God is always with us. Merry Christmas & God Bless, Fr. Mike ************************************************************************************************************ Giggles: Fr. Arnold: "Who delivers the cat's Christmas presents?" Johnny: ""Santa Paws". ****************************************************************************************** Things to say when receiving an unwanted Christmas gift: A. "I don't really deserve this" B. "I Love it, but I fear the jealousy it will inspire." C. "It's hard to put my feelings into words." ****************************************************************************************** A young boy playing Joseph in the school nativity play forgets his lines. His teacher prompts from the side, "you have travelled a long way, Joseph, you are hot and tired." Young Joseph wiped his brow and said, "Boy, do I need a drink!" No genera temor reverencial. El nombre, Emanuel, connota cercanía, intimidad y compasión. El nombre del que ha de venir es Emanuel, que significa "Dios está con nosotros". Dios es confiado a la custodia de una virgen, que parirá este niño. Sólo Dios es tan compasivo para acercarse tanto, ser tan asequible y vulnerable. Sólo Dios puede amar de este modo tan perfecto.
