CreativesOnCall ™ Designed to be together™ FREELANCE FITNESS By April Koenig, Founder & CEO, Creatives On Call One of the biggest perks of being a freelance artist is working in the comfort of your own home. However, there’s a temptation in getting too comfortable at home. The friendly confines can sometimes mean bad eating, skipped workouts and lack of a general routine. Say what you will about the office, but regular standing and walking throughout the day helps aid in daily exercise. Let’s take a look at some simple tips to help make a career from home a more active and healthy way of life. A Separate Space – Put the ‘office’ back in home office. Find a specific space to work, at a desk and away from the TV. It’s tempting to plop your laptop down in front of the couch to write, code or design. Resist that temptation, as it makes for lazy routines. Sitting upright at a desk creates proper posture, proper mental acuity, and proper separation from the rest of the house. Standing Order – Just as you would at the office, remind yourself to stand up regularly. Stretching the legs every so often keeps the blood flowing into extremities and can give your eyes a brief rest from the computer screen. Maybe even work in a toe-touch or two to limber up the back and rear. Snack Attack – Working from home means snacks are always at the ready. It would be much healthier if those snacks came from the fruit bowl and vegetable crisper, rather than the chip bag and cookie jar. A healthy snack habit when working makes it easier to strengthen your overall diet in everyday life. Wet Your Whistle – That clean intake should also include drinking plenty of water. Water is the absolute best way to stay hydrated, and it helps you feel full. Skip the sugary sodas and coffee drinks, and reach for a cold glass of water while working. Exercise Routine – Create a routine at home that includes regular workout time. Whether it’s a gym membership, exercise machine at home, or a nice long walk, this routine should be kept up and adhered to. Tailor it around what work schedule works best for you. Maybe you start your day with a run, or split your work day in half with a trip to the gym. Whatever you decide, stick to it! Dress Up – Want a surefire way to promote an attentive attitude at the home office? Get dressed every morning. Fumbling down the stairs in your pajamas might seem tempting, but it affects your mental health in a negative way (which makes physical health that much harder to maintain). Dressing for success, even at home, makes for a healthier day and healthier life!
