Etna, Italy, 2013 • Each year geologic hazards (earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, landslides, floods) cause enormous death and destruction. What causes these dangerous events and how can we mitigate their effects? • Fossil fuels (oil, coal, natural gas) provide over 80% of world and US energy. Are we running out of fossil fuel? How can we reduce the environmental impacts of using fossil fuel? • Hundreds of millions of people don’t have enough water or don’t have access to safe drinking water. Tragically, an estimated 840,000 people die each year from easily preventable water-related diseases. How can we combat the global water crisis? • How did the Himalayas, Hawaii, and the Grand Canyon form? Why is Illinois so flat? Will California fall into the Pacific Ocean? GEOL 100 answers these questions and more about how our home planet, the Earth, operates. Through engaging discussions and reflections, you’ll get to know other students and the instructor Prof. Steve Altaner, winner of LAS and Campus teaching awards and a veteran online instructor. This course is guaranteed to be interesting, relevant to your life, and FUN! The course and instructor always get high ICES ratings. There are no required meeting times and so students can take this course while also handling a summer job.
