Dear Supporter, Thank you for downloading the Mothering Sunday

Dear Supporter,
Thank you for downloading the Mothering Sunday Children’s Workbook.
The Children’s Society has put together this resource to help children and
young people explore Mothering Sunday and the themes surrounding this
special time of year. This workbook contains a collection of activities from
arts and crafts to prayers and bible activities, all based around the key
seasonal themes of nurture, preparation and reflection.
Fundraising for The Children’s Society this Mothering Sunday provides a great
opportunity for young people to help other children who may not be receiving
the love and care they deserve. There are many ways in which you could
fundraise, including:
•
Getting sponsored to give something up for Lent
•
Making a Simnel Cake and selling by the slice
•
Designing a collection box and collecting loose change
A paying-in slip is included as part of our Leader’s Resource for you to pay in
any money raised. Your kind donation will help The Children’s Society to
provide care, love and understanding to young people who desperately need
our support.
I hope you find this workbook useful and inspiring. If you would like any more
support or have any questions or feedback, please do not hesitate to contact
me on 0207 841 4400.
With kind regards and many thanks,
Steph Ley

My path to
Mothering Sunday
Mothering Sunday is on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
It is a special time to celebrate and say thank you to the people who
care for us:
•Your mum or someone else who takes care of you.
•Your local church cares for people where you live.
•The Children’s Society looks after children who
need help.
This workbook has lots of fun activities to help you get ready for
Mothering Sunday. You will find:
ARTS &
CRAFTS
PRAYERS
PUZZLES
COOKING
BIBLE BUDDIES
PLANTING
FLOWERS
For some of the activities, you will need to ask your parent, teacher
or carer to help you. Look out for this Help Me! sign.
This symbol is on the corner of every page.
Colour in the smiley face when you have
finished the activity.
Collecting
In this workbook there are some ideas for
how you could collect some money for
The Children’s Society – for children who
do not have a very good childhood. Look
out for this Fundraise! sign.
Why not make a collection box to put your money in?
You could use the tube from the middle of a kitchen roll, or make
a box out of cardboard.
You could decorate
your collection box
with…
Drawings
Stickers
Glitter
Pictures
When you have collected your coins, ask an adult
to help you count up your money and send it in to
The Children’s Society. You can find our address
by looking at our website:

Puzzle time
In the old days, Mothering Sunday was a day when children and their
families would go to the church in their home town.
The church was called their Mother Church.
Try this acrostic poem using the words Mother Church.
An acrostic poem is when you take a word or two, and each letter in
the word spells another word:
M = Mum
M……………………………………..
O = Open
O……………………………………..
T = Teaching
T……………………………………..
H = Helping
H……………………………………..
E = Energy
E……………………………………..
R = Rock
R……………………………………..
C = Choir
C……………………………………..
H = Home
H……………………………………..
U = Unite
U……………………………………..
R = Rejoice
R……………………………………..
C = Clapping
C……………………………………..
H = Helping

Get ready, get growing
It is nice to go to church on Mothering Sunday to thank our Mother Church
and the people who care for us.
Instead of buying flowers, grow your own flower in a pot. This will be
nicer as you can decorate the pot and look after the plant yourself.
You
•
•
•
•
•
will need:
A plant pot
Some soil or earth
An old newspaper
Paints to decorate the pot
A bulb to plant
Ask an adult to help with this activity.
First, decorate your plant pot using the paints. Make it bright and cheerful!
Next, plant your bulb.
Think about what your plant will need to grow.
Make sure you look after it. Put it in the best
place to grow and make sure it has enough water.

Get ready, get growing
At church on Mothering Sunday you can tell everybody about
what you are doing and make them smile.
What time is the service? ………………………………………………….
Where is it? ……………………………………………………………………………
Talk to an adult about where
you could plant your bulb once
the flowers have gone.
We would like you to plant it
somewhere outside so that it will give
you and others joy in the future.
Find somewhere where lots of
people will see the flowers.
Get together in a group with other
children that have grown the bulbs – the
more flowers the better.

Bible buddies
If you go to church on Mothering Sunday, you may hear three stories or
readings from the bible. They are:
A story from 2 Corinthians – this can be found in chapter 1, verses 3-7
A story from Exodus – this can be found in chapter 2, verses 1-10
Luke’s story - this can be found in chapter 2, verses 33-35
Find a bible buddy and ask them to
help you find the reading in the bible.
Who is your bible buddy? …………………………………………
Read through the story together and answer these questions:
Q.
The story from Exodus talks about a baby called Moses. Can
you find out what Moses did when he grew up and why he was an
important man?
A.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Q.
The story from 2 Corinthians talks about Jesus ‘consoling’ us, so
that we can console others. What does it mean to ‘console’ someone?
A.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Q.
In Luke’s story, who is Mary and why is she important?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………..
A.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Potato printing
If you want to give a present to someone on Mothering
Sunday, you could make and print your own wrapping paper.
You
•
•
•
•
will need:
An old newspaper
A potato
Paper
Paints
TOP TIP: Use the old newspaper to work on so you do not get
paint on the furniture.
Ask an adult to cut the top of the potato off
(about 3 cm).
Then ask them to cut a star shape into the top
of the potato.
Dip the potato into the
paint and then press it
on to the paper.
Wait for the paint to dry
before using the wrapping
paper.
If you do not use your wrapping paper, you could ask
people for a donation for The Children’s Society.

Ask an adult – your vicar, teacher, carer or family, what these
words mean when we talk about Mothering Sunday
You could get sponsored for each word
you find and give the money you raise to

Make a Simnel cake
Mothering Sunday is also called
Refreshment Sunday.
This is because people would eat what
they wanted on this day, even though they
might have given up some foods for Lent.
Often people would make a cake called a
Simnel cake, which is a fruitcake.
Simnel cake is a bit like a Christmas cake.
Why not make a Simnel Cake
for Mothering Sunday? Ask
an adult to help you find the
recipe on The Children’s
Society website at
www.childrenssociety.org.uk
/mothering
You could ask for a donation for a piece of cake and
give the money to The Children’s Society.

Card making
Instead of buying a Mothering Sunday card for the person who
cares for you, why not make a card?
You will need:
•
Paper or card
•
Colouring pens, pencils or paints
Fold your piece of paper or card in two. On the outside, draw a
picture – make it fun and cheery. You could maybe draw around and
colour in some of these cartoons:
Make more cards for other people around you who may not have
children or whose children are far away.
Collect the money you have saved by making the card and
give the money to The Children’s Society.
I did this!
Group chat and prayer
The Children's Society is a charity. This means we try to help people.
We help children who are unhappy and don’t have a very good childhood.
We try to make childhood better for all children.
Talk about how
some children in
your town might be
unhappy and why.
Ask an adult
to help you
find out what
The Children’s Society
does.
Ask an adult to look at what we do on
the computer. You can look at our
website at
www.childrenssociety.org.uk/kidszone
God, you love all people.
Help us to love everyone like you do.
Amen.

Pray for children
who are unhappy.
You could use
the prayer
written here.
