In the formation of the movie "Kafka", the creators did as much as they could to make it Kafkaesque. For something to be Kafkaesque it must first of all have a sense of obscurity and/or surrealism. One can plainly see that this is true by reading any of his work, in particular "The Metamorphosis." Also part of the definition of Kafkaesque are: comic absurdity, weariness of routine or meeting pe oples expectations alienation, disconnectedness and futility. Through use of setting, characters, a nd plot, the creators accomplished making this film as Kafkaesque as possible. The surrealistic nat ure of this film undoubtedly makes it Kafkaesque. The setting in particular added to the surrealism of the film. Most of the surrealism from setting comes from scenes taking place in the castle scen es. Some aspects of comic absurdity are also present here. For example, when Kafka is walking towa rds what he thinks is the medical records with Dr. Murnau, a man on roller skates rolls past them ca rrying files on what can only be described as a yoke. The idea that efficiency is so important and crucial that one must wear roller skates is ridiculous. Another surrealistic, although short lived, scene in the castle is when Kafka exits the file room from which he entered the castle in and enter s a five sided hallway with a staircase and door for each side. Kafka, being the ingenious one, rec ognizes the possible dilemma that could arise once he wants to leave the castle and marks his stairc ase with ink. Seeing this hallway from above and its symmetry shows us how confusing life can be. No one would ever design a set of staircases as such, which is what makes it so Kafkaesque. A major scene in the castle was the scene in which Dr. Murnau's lab is revealed to Kafka. If there's a more surrealistic scene, I haven't seen it. It is utterly absurd that to study the brain of a human one must place them under an enormous microscope, and look through it probably three stories up. The s urrealistic nature of the scene is pushed even further when Kafka is attempting to escape from the l ab by walking across the huge lens that is used as the microscope. We first see that the lens is sh owing us the brain of the man under the microscope, but soon that man breaks free and all we see is blackness. Then, when one of Kafka's assistants becomes curious and looks up into the giant microsc ope, we see Kafka walking across a huge eye. Not something one sees everyday. One character in part icular stands out as absurd, almost to the point of laughing. The wild and hideous laughing man is a clear representation of what defines Kafkaesque. The idea that a normal man could be transformed i nto this beast of a man that will do anything, even commit murder, for a small vial of what we can o nly assume is drugs is ludicrous. Another defining aspect of something that is Kafkaesque is its we ariness of routine, or the general humdrum of life. Most of this facet of Kafkaesque takes place in Kafka's office. The first being the repetition of the employees punching in at the beginning of th e workday. formation movie kafka creators much they could make kafkaesque something kafkaesque must first have sense obscurity surrealism plainly that this true reading work particular metamorphosis also part definition kafkaesque comic absurdity weariness routine meeting peoples expectations alien ation disconnectedness futility through setting characters plot creators accomplished making this fi lm possible surrealistic nature this film undoubtedly makes setting particular added surrealism film most surrealism from setting comes from scenes taking place castle scenes some aspects comic absurd ity also present here example when kafka walking towards what thinks medical records with murnau rol ler skates rolls past them carrying files what only described yoke idea that efficiency important cr ucial that must wear roller skates ridiculous another surrealistic although short lived scene castle when kafka exits file room from which entered castle enters five sided hallway with staircase door each side being ingenious recognizes possible dilemma could arise once wants leave marks staircase w ith seeing hallway above symmetry shows confusing life would ever design staircases such which what makes major scene scene which murnau revealed there more surrealistic haven seen utterly absurd stud y brain human must place them under enormous microscope look through probably three stories nature p ushed even further when attempting escape walking across huge lens used microscope first lens showin g brain under microscope soon breaks free blackness then assistants becomes curious looks into giant walking across huge something sees everyday character particular stands absurd almost point laughin g wild hideous laughing clear representation defines idea normal could transformed into beast will a nything even commit murder small vial only assume drugs ludicrous another defining aspect something weariness routine general humdrum life most facet takes place office first being repetition employee s punching beginning workdayEssay, essays, termpaper, term paper, termpapers, term papers, book repo rts, study, college, thesis, dessertation, test answers, free research, book research, study help, d ownload essay, download term papers
