JOE: I’ve got a fiver, you wanna go to macdonalds? ASHLEY: Nah, I’ve not got anything, she said I’ll just waste it. TERRI: If she doesn’t give you any money what are you supposed to do all day? ASHLEY: She reckons there’s loads you can do, she’s like ‘oh visit safe4summer, it tells you all the stuff that’s happening on there’. (Imitating someone else’s high pitched voice) JOE: And does it? ASHLEY: Dunno, I couldn’t be bothered looking, I was on Facebook JOE and TERRI roll their eyes. TERRI: Well... JOE: What? TERRI: What are we doing today? JOE: Park? SCENE 2 At the park Terri and Joe are sitting on a bench, Ashley is standing over a bin fiddling with something ASHLEY: So... this is boring TERRI: Yep, you wanna do something else? JOE: Let me finish this first TERRI: What? Realising what Joe is doing Oh... ASHLEY: Careful we’ll get in loads of trouble if anyone sees JOE: It’s so not a big deal, my brother used to set fire to bins all the time, there’s like nothing in not like I’m setting fire to a house or anything TERRI: Yeah it’ll be fine, no-one will even care. JOE: I’m done now anyway, where are we going? TERRI: Rese? there – it’s SCENE 3 The three friends arrive at the side of the reservoir, it’s deserted except for them ASHLEY: It’s well quiet, I thought it’d be busy JOE: TERRI: JOE: Na, everyone’s scared of coming after that lad drowned last year Who was that? Dunno some kid... He went to another school I think ASHLEY: Well I’m not getting in if people have died in there or something I’m just gonna sit at the side TERRI: Well I’m going in. (Looking at JOE) Bet I can swim to the other side and back, before you can run all the way around the edge. JOE: Yeah I’ll bet you can, you’re a top swimmer and it’ll take ages to run all the way round. TERRI: All right then, bet I can swim to the other side and back, before... you can get to that tree and back. JOE: Ok I’ll take that bet. Ash you’re ref ASHLEY: (engaged in a tense game on a phone) Yeah whatever, knock yourselves out, I’ll be here TERRI: (takes shoes off and gets into the water) Oh man it’s freezin’ Ash, count us off. ASHLEY: (still not looking up from the phone) What? Oh umm 3, 2, 1 go The other two start their race, Ashley carries on playing with the phone. In no time at all Joe is back. JOE: (out of breath) Did I win? ASHLEY: (still not looking up from the phone) Hmm? Looks like it JOE looks out toward the water JOE: Where’s Terri got to – I can’t... ASHLEY: (getting agitated about being distracted from the phone again) What? You can’t what? JOE: I can’t see Terri ASHLEY: (looks over the water exaggeratedly) I’m sure that if you just look you’ll see.... (Ashley’s voice trails off as realisation that their friend can’t be seen dawns) JOE: Maybe Terri got out on the other side or something. ASHLEY: No, the sides are really steep over there, look. No one would be able to get out JOE: (shouting) Terri! Terri!? Ashley keeps watching the water trying to see Terri JOE: Terri! Terri! (The shouts start to get faster now) Terri Terri Terri Terri! ASHLEY: (starting to panic too) Terri! Terri! JOE: I’m gonna get in and look ASHLEY: You’re not supposed to do that JOE: What? ASHLEY: They said, you should just call 999 if someone is in trouble, don’t get in. SCENE 4 Ashley and Joe sit back to back on the floor JOE: It took 7 minutes for the fire engine to arrive. ASHLEY: They were busy putting out a rubbish bin fire. JOE: It took them 4 hours to find Terri’s body ASHLEY: They said it was the cold. JOE: it made it too hard to breath, to use your muscles. They said I was Ash though ASHLEY: They reckon if we’d gone in after Terri, we’d have died too. Bored – Worksheet: Possible Answers 1) List 3 key events in the story? • • • • • • • • Ashley doesn’t check the safe 4 summer website Joe sets fire to the rubbish bin Terri dares/bets with Joe Terri gets into the water Ashley fails to watch what happens Terri goes missing Ashley and Joe call the fire service Terri is found 2) Choose the main turning point, how does this affect the way the story turns out? • • • • • • • The friends have nothing to do for the day and get bored. This is potentially the fire that delays the fire service, and it could have made things a lot worse, if for instance something else had caught fire e.g. a bench or a tree, or if someone had thrown something flammable into the bin, not realising that it was on fire. Terri puts pressure on himself to do something that he knows he shouldn’t, which results in him risking his own life. Getting into the water even though it is cold is the root cause of Terri’s death. By not watching Ashley makes it more difficult for the fire service to help Terri, as it is not known where Terri got into trouble nor how long Terri has been under the water. Calling the fire service instead of getting into the water, keeps the others out of danger. It is learned what has happened and how Terri ended up in danger. 3) What could each of the characters have done differently to change the outcome of the day? • • • Ashley could have been more organised and found something fun and safe to do on the safe4 summer website Joe shouldn’t have set the bin alight. Terri shouldn’t have gone into the water, especially once it was discovered how cold the water was. 4) Fill out the diagram to show how what happened to Terri has many potential consequences. • Ripple effect: Terri’s family have lost a loved one. Terri’s friends have lost their friend. Money spent by the emergency services, ban people from swimming in open areas,
