RIVERSIDE FIRE AUTHORITY PRESENTS: 2013 Southwest Washington Fire Service Leadership Summit With Anthony Kastros and Ed Hadfield May 6 – May 9, 2013 Location: Time: Cost: RFA Headquarters Fire Station 1818 Harrison Avenue, Centralia, WA. 0900-1700 $325.00 per person Description: A leadership pandemic is sweeping the American Fire Service. The result is increased litigation, liability, injury and even death to firefighters and civilians alike. Gross inefficiency, ineffectiveness and tarnished public trust are just some of the results of this enormous problem. Solid, effective and dynamic leadership is rare in the fire service today. Day one of this Summit is geared toward what excellent leaders are, and are not. We focus on the challenges facing today’s fire service supervisors, leaders and fire departments. Leadership is a word often used in the fire service, but rarely seen. We tell it like it is, from real world experience in busy fire houses, battalions, and historical events. Day two of the summit focuses on what makes excellent teams work, the difference in personalities and roles. We also look at the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds as a model. Day three focuses on Command, Strategy, and Tactics. Today’s fireground should be a calm and orchestrated event, but often it is not. Diversified mission, mass attrition, and little or no command training have created an era in today’s fire service where the simple “bread and butter” house fire is a sentinel event. Participants will join in simulations for house fires, garden/center hall apartments, commercial, wildland, MCI, and hazardous materials incidents. How do I set clear tactical objectives, have clear communications and establish command presence on my fires? How do I create a personal system that blends all of my classes, certifications, SOP’s, ICS, and tactical fundamentals into a simple, street smart and effective way? What’s the difference between size ups and arrival reports and how do I become great at both? What are the trigger points and safety issues of Offensive, Defensive and Combination strategies? What are the key points to Rescue, Exposures, Confinement, Extinguishment, Overhaul, Ventilation and Salvage? On day 4, Ed and Anthony will present “The Seat of Command”. Today's command officers are facing unprecedented challenges as Incident Commanders. Adding to the problem is a rapidly changing fire ground as a result of today's modern building construction, the contents which are placed within these structures and the amount of civilians who are occupying these homes. Not since the early 1970's have we seen this magnitude of occupied structural fires and civilian casualties and deaths. This program is designed to provide command officers with the necessary skills to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. It is vital that all personnel operating in the fire service have a strong understanding of today’s dynamic challenges that command officers’ face. The Seat of Command focuses on the factual understanding of ventilation’s impact as it relates to the modern fire ground and the changing dynamics of the interior fire. The proper steps and vital importance of size-up and performing a dynamic risk assessment of the structure, while providing control points and resources to the hazard in a prioritized manner, will be addressed. This program will provide the student with street-smart tactics, incident reviews of multi-alarm fires, multiple dynamic simulations and case reviews of lessons learned in prior incidents. To safely operate in this kind of environment, we must develop the skill to maintain situational analysis (SA). These skill sets will provide you the ability to control what is happening around you and where you are in relation to threats. Building SA for the fire ground is predicated on an intuitive understanding of fire behavior and building construction. Students will be exposed to fire ground tactical decision making as a means of effectively using SA to be better prepared to confront the challenging environment of the fire ground.
