Kitchen cabinet – Jackson’s real advisors – met in his kitchen Bank War 1. The Bank of the U.S. would run out in 1836 2. Jackson didn’t like it 3. Henry Clay and Daniel Webster tried to get it renewed in 1832 knowing that Jackson would turn it down 4. They counted on the voters to not vote for Jackson because he got rid of the Bank. 5. The Bank died and Jackson still got re-elected Tariff of Abominations • 1828- another protective tariff • John C. Calhoun (V-P) claimed a state could nullify a law it considered unconstitutional • States’ rights – states could limit the governments power • Calhoun resigns in protest Nullification Crisis • Lower tariff passed in 1832 • South Carolina threatens to secede • Compromise tariff eventually passed Indian Removal Act(1830) • Indians forced to move West of the Mississippi River • Cherokees attempted to use legal means – were told by Supreme Court and John Marshall they could keep their land • Andrew Jackson used states’ rights to take away their land • Cherokees forced to move at gunpoint – Trail of Tears • Seminoles resist in Florida – Seminole War Extra Information
