Salutary Neglect: An unofficial policy in which England in theory tightened its reigns over the colonies but in reality loosened them. Why does this matter? more product you can produce the more money you can make. This means you need more land, labor, and capital. All three are necessary, if only growing for your needs alone, slavery would never take place. This is also important because the crops grown in the south were labor intensive year round. Northern crops were not therefor it made no sense to pay for slaves in terms of cost to benefit. Indentured Servants: Usually white males trying to escape poverty or prison in Europe who came to the new world to start anew. They worked in to pay off a debt. If survived term they were free. Why does this matter? The truly never prospered, many died while trying to work for freedom, and even when freed they never really made it(no money to start fresh). This meant that they stopped coming or ran when they got here, system did not work. Hence the origins of Africanized Slavery in the New World. Slavery: People who are property of others Triangle Trade: three way trading process where Ships carried raw materials and some simple manufactured goods from the America's to Europe, these goods were then manufactured fully in Europe, sold in Africa for Slaves, who were then transported to teh America's to work, repeat cycle over and over. Middle Passage: Voyage from Africa to the America's Stono Rebellion: one of many slave revolts that took place in the America's you can find many, many examples. It led to the idea of Natural Rights Natural Rights: rights that belong to every person, regardless of rank or citizenship. Why does this matter? Enlightenment scholars believed that people have rights that the government must respect, this led to a questioning of what the government of England was actually giving them. Great Awakening: A religious revival in which religious power and authority started to move from the organized church to regular people. The 4th and final war in a series of wars between Britain and France over North America and other colonies. Also known as the Seven Years War even though historians will put the length of the war anywhere from 713 years depending on what you actually consider the starting point. An example of this is the fact that the British Colonists and French were fighting each other directly and through Native American allies 2 years before a declaration of hostilities in Europe. What prompted this war to take place? Both the English and the French were expanding their holds in North America and the two sides realized that they both wanted the same territory which only one could have.
