NASA Kennedy Space Center/cSETR Program Trip to the Cape July 26-30, 2010 What is It? The Center for Space Exploration Technology Research at The University of Texas at El Paso is sponsoring an opportunity for El Paso County, Texas, middle school students (7th-8th grades) to participate in a NASA grant-funded educational program. The program will provide funding for students to travel to the NASA Kennedy Space Center in Cocoa Beach, Florida, to attend an education forum, hands-on activities and tour of the center. In addition, program activities are currently scheduled to coincide with the expected launch of STS-134, which is space shuttle Endeavour’s final mission to the International Space Station. STS-134 is currently scheduled for July 29, 2010 at 7:51 a.m. EDT. This mission will be the second to last shuttle mission. [However, please be aware that NASA does not guarantee the viewing of the launch.] How Much Does it Cost? This program is grant funded by NASA Minority University Research and Education Programs (MUREP) Small Programs (MSP) and The University of Texas at El Paso Center for Space Exploration Technology Research (cSETR). Travel, lodging, and meals will be provided throughout the week. Spending money for the purchase souvenirs or other incidentals is recommended. When and Where is It? Students will travel as a group from The University of Texas at El Paso to the NASA Kennedy Space Center, Cocoa Beach, Florida, via airlines and rental vans. Travel days: July 26, 2010 and July 30, 2010 Program days: July 27-29, 2010 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM Students attending the program will meet each morning on the UM campus. Instructional settings include the College of Engineering, the Medical School, the Departments of Chemistry and Physics, and labs located around the campus. Who is Eligible to Apply? You are eligible to apply if: * You will enter the 7th OR 8th grade in June, 2010 * You have an interest in science, mathematics, or engineering * You send us a complete application, including a letter of recommendation postmarked no later than June 1, 2010 * No previous experience in math, science or engineering is necessary; however, a desire to learn is. How Do I Apply? Complete the entire student application form. Use black ink or black type. Give the recommendation form to the person you have chosen to recommend you. Remember that your recommendation must be from a math or science teacher. We will not consider an application until it is complete, including a letter of recommendation. Return your completed application by June 1, 2010. Selected applicants will be notified by June 18, 2010. All applicants will be invited to attend a NASA research activity at UTEP in July.
