Early Church
A huge fire came upon the city of Rome, and the blame fell upon the Emperor, Nero. But Nero, in order to divert suspicion,
blamed it on the Christians, claiming they did it to fulfill their prophecies.
In return, Nero burned Christians. He tied them to crosses, poured flammable liquids on them, and lit them on fire. Some were
torn up by dogs, and yet others were crucified. Nero enjoyed watching Christians burn, while he sat in his palace, using the
Christians as a “torch.”
He killed many Christians, some believe as many as 100,000. Also, Christianity was only 20+ years old at the time, so not many
believed. If he killed that many people, he might’ve wiped out or killed the majority of Christians if not all of them in Rome.
The Roman empire continued to persecute Christians throughout the years. They did it for hundreds of years, continuing under
each new ruler. One story in particular stands out.
One story in particular stuck out to me, and that was a story of a man named Julian. Julian was seized by the Romans for being
a Christian. He was put into a leather bag, together with many snakes and scorpions, then thrown into the sea. He was severely
punish for simply believing in Christ. This occurred in the 3rd century.
Roman emperors started to persecute during Nero’s time, and continued on to the beginning on the 4th century. They
persecuted Christians for 400 years, immediately sentencing all Christians to death, most of them were tortured, beheaded,
then burned. A few suffered different death, but all the same.
Persecution in Tanzania
Persecution has been happening in Tanzania for a while,
and they are ranked 33rd in the world in persecution. Most
Christians are persecuted by Muslim extremists, for many
different reasons. Pastors, churches, and other religious
leaders are targeted. The island of Zanzibar is one of the
places that is most targeted for persecution. Muslims and
other religions outnumber Christians in Zanzibar, and
Tanzania. They are being killed, tortured, and many other
things because they are Christians.
Fun Facts
Out of the total 52.2 million people, 25.3 million are Christians or 48.4% of the population.
!
One of the places that is most popular with persecution is Zanzibar, an island of the Eastern coast of Tanzania. 99% of the
population there is Muslims, with the remaining 1% mostly Christians. According to the recent census, about 1.3 million
people live there, while 1,287,000 are Muslim. That leaves about 30,000 Christians that are being heavily persecuted for
their faith.

!
Most of the attacks on Christians are aimed at Pastors and other Christian leaders.
!
Also, because more and more are being killed, more and more hear about it and believe. Islam is attempted to kill
Christians, but many others are hearing about it and coming to Christ.
!
Most of the attacks on Christians are aimed at Pastors and other Christian leaders. Islam has been on the rise the past
few years, and because of this, more and more Christians are being killed.
