Responding to the Refugee Crisis
Catastrophic civil conflict has forced millions of people to flee their
homes in the Middle East, Africa and Afghanistan. This week alone,
10,000 arrived in one day on a small Greek island. Highlands has
responded to the calls for help.
We have been greatly rewarded from our sponsorship of Hasna
Mohamed, forced to flee Ethiopa, alone, and arriving here about six
months ago. Her charm, good nature and determination to triumph
over adversity and build a new life in Canada has been an inspiration
to our congregation. (More information: Marilyn MacDonald;
604-908-3747, [email protected])
More recently, Highlands has joined the North Shore United Refugee
Committee. This coalition of all seven North Shore United churches
has just taken the first steps to bring the Kawa Mohammad family of
seven to Vancouver. They fled Syria and are now in Kurdistan.
(More information: Bill Dyer; 604-980-9815, [email protected])
And if anyone is interested in learning more about the refugee crisis,
consider the following invitation to a seminar this Sunday:
Invitation to rally the churches on Nov. 1st
A “must attend” for churches/individuals wishing to engage in the
refugee crisis.

creche (3 dimensional, any style/type, or
hanging nativity pictures) for our Nativity

the church office any week day, or on Sundays, place them on the
table in the choir room or ask someone at the nativity table in the

All scenes need to be in by Sun. Nov. 22, but it is helpful if you
bring them in as soon as possible!

From Highlands' Climate & Environment Action Group:
A New Faith Statement on Climate Justice
United Church Moderator Jordan Cantwell, along with 25 other
Canadian faith leaders, has endorsed the statement "On Promoting
Climate Justice and Ending Poverty in Canada." This statement
represents a meeting of the minds and hearts of many diverse faith
organizations, including the World Buddhist Council, World Sikh
Organization of Canada, and a broad range of Christian
denominations.
In advance of the 21 st United
Nations Climate Change
Conference (COP21, to be held
this December in Paris), the
statement calls on Canadian
leaders to create “a comprehensive
plan, with the appropriate policies
in place and the full encouragement of Canadians, to keep our
promise to reduce emissions, meet or surpass the agreed targets, and
so do our part in slowing the effects of climate change.” A United
Church delegation will bring this call for leadership on climate change
to the COP21. Here is the statement:

CHOPS
Cookies for Highlands Outreach Projects
Attention children: Do you want to earn your baking
CHOPS? Come and join the “Cookies for Highlands Outreach
Projects” baking group, and have fun baking cookies with
friends and sharing them with the community at Saturday
lunch outreach!
The next CHOPS event will be on Sunday November 8
following the service.
Bring an adult and a lunch and we'll have a communal
"picnic" after church, before starting the mixing, baking and
decorating. If you have a favourite recipe you'd like to make,
bring it along! We will provide staple ingredients.
This activity is targeted to children from preschool to grade 3
with a parent or other adult, though all ages are welcome. We
would love to have some new CHOPs families join our crew!
If you have questions or would like more information, please
contact Nancy ([email protected]) or Amanda
([email protected]).
We hope to see you on November 8th.

Message from Highlands “Visiting Ministry Team” for
North Shore Senior Care Facilities
Have you been waiting for the “right volunteer position” at
Highlands United? Are you interested in providing monthly
visitations for some very nice folks from our Congregation in
various Senior Care Facilities?
Don’t like meetings? Want a flexible volunteer position within your
own private time? Want to feel like “giving back” fills you up with
kindness, a feeling of joy & self satisfaction?
Perhaps you have been waiting for the right time to volunteer or
the right thing to put your energies into. Then, maybe being a part
of the “Visiting Ministry Team” is for YOU!!
One visit a month is required to a designated Senior Care Facility
to bring news from Highlands, a listening ear & just to be a friend
to one of our many Seniors who are not able to spend time with
us at church.
We also need folks who may want to just fill in for the monthly
regular visitors when holidays occur or a personal sabbatical is
required. Maybe being part of the Sub/Alternate group would fit
with you?
If so, please notify me if you are interested in being a full time
Visitor or even a Sub/Alternate. We would love to have you join
our Team!!
Call the Church Office: 604-980-6071 & ask for Jacqueline Scott.

again asking for your support in helping us
reach our target of providing 1000 pair of men’s and women’s socks by
mid November for the programs at First United Church in the
Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.
( In Nov. 2014 we delivered 1500+ pair)
You can help by contributing socks-- white, black or any colour in
between or by donating money toward the purchase of packages of
sport socks. Contribution cheques can be made out to HIGHLANDS
UNITED CHURCH and note SOCK APPEAL in the memo line. Your
donation will be included for tax purposes with your annual statement.
A member of the Local Connections Committee will be at the Action
Table today to receive and record your contribution.
Many thanks to those who have responded.
Healing Hands Ministry at Highlands Church
For the past 18 years Healing Hands sessions have
been offered at Highlands Church.
Currently there are13 active practitioners who offer sessions of
healing --usually in pairs-- to members of the congregation and the
community every week . People come to receive for many reasons:
for relaxation, for stress relief, or for accompanied prayer. Some
who come to receive are dealing with pain or illness or are
caregivers. Others are dealing with grief or troubling spiritual or
emotional questions.
You are warmly invited to come and receive a healing hands session
this fall sessions will be
Thursday Oct 1, Oct 15, Oct 29, Nov 12, Nov 26, Dec 3 and Dec 17
at 10:00 a.m.
Monday evening times are: Oct. 5, Oct. 19, Nov. 2, Nov. 16, and
Dec. 7, at 7:30 or 8:15
We are also available to offer sessions in homes, care centres and
hospital. Appointments are booked by calling Lorraine Elliot at 604985-4502. If you would like more information contact Sharon Yetman

Up-Coming Book Circle Titles
As always we have chosen books that are
varied in terms of style, topic and time.
Nov. 24th: "The Far Side of the Sky" (2012) by Daniel Kalla
Jan. 26th: "Coming Ashore" (2014) by Catherine Gildiner
Feb. 23rd: "Madame Bovary" (1856) by Gustave Flaubert
Drop-ins are welcome so feel free to come whenever your schedule
permits or when a particular book catches your fancy.
We meet on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm. This is a small
group activity with attendance varying from 6-10 people so it is a great
opportunity to meet or get to know others at a deeper level than is
possible just at coffee time. For example, during a recent discussion
we learned that one of our regular attendees spent the first two and a
half years of her married life in the Dominican Republic which was the
setting for part of the book under discussion. Our varied backgrounds
lead to many similar insights about the locations and themes of the
books we select.
