Brainstorm words in pairs Getting Acquainted/Early RAP Session Introductory Sessions variation available for assorted topics Center Based Care (due to process) [FCC Version: “One Word”] Reflection Activity Three Words About Your Program Identify three important things about your program through repeating a process of selecting 3 words. Step 1. Brainstorm with a Partner (Reflection Level 1: Remember) • Think about your program for a minute. Consider: - • What do you like about it? What do you think are some of its important services, policies and practices? What are some of the ways it benefits children, families and the community? Together, select 3 different words that describe things about your program you think are important. Step 2: Reflect with another Pair (Reflection Level 1: Remember; (Level 2: Recognize/Understand) Join with another pair of participants. Share the three words selected by each pair. You now have 6 words. In this group of 4, discuss how these 6 words apply to the program. Together, agree on 3 of the words you think are most important in communicating key values, services, policies, or practices in your program. Note: if the group is large, consider repeating another cycle. Each group of 4 shares with another group of 4 and together each combined group selects three words. Step 3: Share & Reflect as a Whole Group (Level 2: Recognize/Understand) 1. Report to the whole group the three words your group identified to describe your program. (All groups share.) 2. After all groups have shared think about, respond to, and discuss the following: - What did you notice/hear? In the information shared, was there anything that surprised you? What other feelings came up for you? What was encouraging or discouraging about the words? What did you learn about yourself? What did you learn about your program? Optional – Goal Setting Step 4: Brainstorm & Reflect [Small or Whole Group] (Level 2: Recognize/Understand) What one word could describe something you would like for your program to work on? *(Variation: The 3 word process could be used to identify possible goals and narrow them down to 1 or 2.) Additional Notes to Trainer: 1. The trainer should decide how many and which of the questions to use, or how to vary them. 2. Options: It can be done with or without writing the words. A 3x5 index card could be used for each word, providing variety and facilitating groups sharing their words and selecting from them. 3. The words could be saved and revisited numerous times as they relate to other topics or RAP sessions. 4. *Using the “3 word” process to identify goals could be done in a subsequent session before the program sets their first goal(s). 5. Variation: This process could be applied to specific topics with centers & FCC providers. C. Longaker, D.
