Commas and Co-ordinating Conjunctions
And, but, for, nor, or, so, and yet—these are the seven coordinating conjunctions. (Use the
acronym FANBOYS if that helps.)
Remember- A sentence must have both a SUBJECT (noun (s)or pronoun(s) and a PREDICATE
(verb(s).
Sentence #1: Harry is turning sixteen this weekend.
Sentence #2: He is having a party on Saturday.
Combining with a comma and a coordinating conjunction:
Harry is turning sixteen this weekend, and he is having a party on Saturday. (Still two
complete sentences joined with AND and a comma.)
NO COMMA: Harry is turning sixteen this weekend and is having a party on Saturday.
WHY? is having a party on Saturday isn’t a complete sentence.
