RAVENSWOOD SWIMMING CLUB 2015/2016 SEASON
About the Club
The Ravenswood Swim Club (RSC) is a not-for-profit sporting organisation administered by a
volunteer committee and based at Ravenswood School for Girls at Gordon in Sydney, utilising a 25
metre indoor pool all year round.
In turn RSC is a member of the Metro North East (MNE) Swimming Association and, beyond that,
Swimming New South Wales.
What is the focus of the club?
RSC is focused on creating an environment that will help every swimmer be the best they can be.
It is about enjoying swimming in the first instance, developing skills and confidence in a supportive
environment, and when swimmers are ready, providing the opportunity to apply those skills in inter
club swimming competitions.
Who can join the club?
The club welcomes girls and boys - of all swimming abilities - who are part of the wider Ravenswood
community.
What are the benefits of joining the club?
Joining the RSC provides a number of key benefits for developing swimmers:

the opportunity to compete in our monthly Friday night race competition

the opportunity to compete as part of the RSC team in formal swimming carnivals throughout
the year at area, state and national levels
How do I join the club?
This year membership has streamlined to allow members to register with the Club and Swimming
NSW in one transaction. Membership for RSC and Swimming NSW has now been changed so that
members are only paying one fee for both clubs. This can be done via the Swimming NSW website.
Membership can be paid online via ClubLANE. You will receive an invoice with instructions on how
to proceed. Payments with credit card will incur a 1.5% fee and this is mandated by Swimming NSW.
*PLEASE NOTE* given this is still a relatively new facility it is essential for all members to review their
invoice before payment. Any errors should be sent to [email protected] so that
relevant adjustments can be made.
One parent from each family must also become a non-swimming member of Swimming NSW if your
child is a registered swimmer with Swimming NSW, and swims anywhere other than the Ravenswood
pool. This provides insurance for that parent in the event of injury whilst performing a duty at any
NSW Swimming sanctioned carnival.

How do I register for Swimming NSW?
All members from the 2014/15 season have been registered, and will receive their details in the
October 2015 registration process.
To join after 1 October 2015 go to http://nsw.swimming.org.au/
Click on the Membership tab at the top of the page.
Click through to the Member Portal and follow the instructions from there.
If you cannot remember your username and password, email the Club Registrar on
[email protected] and the details will be sent to you.
Please advise the Registrar when you join so that your membership can be activated on
ClubLane.
Current NSW Swimming membership expires on September 30, 2016.
New members can join any time through the year and should contact the Club Registrar
([email protected]).
Can I try before I buy?
Of course you can!
All swimmers new to the club are able to participate in one (1) “try before you buy” club race night
without signing up. If they wish to continue beyond that they will need to complete a membership form
and pay their membership fees.
What do the Monthly Friday ‘Club Race Nights’ involve?
RSC Race Nights will take place monthly on a select Friday throughout the year at the Ravenswood
school pool. The evening commences with warm up from 5.30pm, with races starting promptly at
6:00pm and the whole evening generally finishing about 7:00pm.
Each night will include a specific selection of strokes/distances, which will vary by night. The list of
events will be available on the website so swimmers can choose which events they wish to swim.
Competitors may swim in a maximum of 4 events each night.
The shortest distance race is 25 metres for our junior swimmers. Swimmers who are able to swim
25m in under 25 seconds in a specific stroke are encouraged to compete in the longer events.
For longer distance events (200m, 400m) swimmers must be able to complete the distance in a
reasonable time and should check with the coach before entering.
It is important to note that no children less than 12 years of age can be left unsupervised on race
nights and parent volunteers are always required for marshalling, timekeeping and at the barbeque –
if everyone comes prepared to help, the workload is shared and everyone gets to enjoy the night.
A sausage sizzle is open to all members for a small fee.

RAVENSWOOD SWIMMING CLUB 2015/2016 SEASON
Tell me more about the external club carnivals
RSC participates in external club carnivals throughout the year at area, state and national levels –
club swimming is certainly not just a summer sport.
The competitive swimming year is divided into two ‘seasons’:

“Long Course” season, so called because its swum in 50 metre pools (running approx. from
September through to end of April)

“Short Course” season, so called because it is swum in 25 metre pools (from May through
to August).
All four (4) strokes are swum in both seasons, across a range of distances from 50m up to 200m –
whilst individual medley and freestyle are swum at longer distances.
Once they are ready, all swimmers in the Club are encouraged to participate in external competitions.
Swimmers will be notified when carnivals are coming up via email / the website and should consult
with their coaches to determine the correct events for them to compete in at each carnival.
To compete in these carnivals individual swimmers have to pay a small fee per event entered – with
fees starting from about $5.00 per event.
Many of the carnivals also provide the opportunity for club relay teams, and swimmers will be selected
for these teams by the coaching staff on the basis of their recent performances to help ensure the
best team outcome. The club always pays the entry fees for relay teams.
When competing at these inter club competitions club members must always wear a RSC swim club
cap, and parents will be called upon to volunteer a small amount of time to share in our club
timekeeping responsibilities – something that parents at all swim clubs do.
How do I enter these external club carnivals?
There are two different methods for entering these external club carnivals:
1. Online Entry System
This system is available for major Swimming NSW and Swimming Australia events and simply
involves going to either of the respective websites and following the simple procedures.
In this system payments are made directly online by credit card.
Most of these events will have formal qualifying times that will dictate what events any swimmer can
enter. If the swimmer does not have a formal qualifying time logged on the NSW swimming database,
they may not be able to enter.

RAVENSWOOD SWIMMING CLUB 2015/2016 SEASON
RAVENSWOOD SCHOOL FOR GIRLS
SPORT CODE OF CONDUCT
EXPECTATIONS
PLAYERS
 Play by the rules, in a spirit of good sportsmanship and accept the official’s decision at all times.

Play for your own enjoyment and not just to please parents, staff and coaches.

Strictly refrain from the use of profanities and the verbal abuse of officials and players.

Strictly refrain from deliberate fouling or provoking opponents, or abusing equipment.

Work hard for yourself, your team and the school. Strive to improve your skills and your performance.

Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Respect the rights and dignity of all participants
regardless of their ability or background.

Co-operate with your coach, team-mates and opponents. Without them there would be no game.

Be modest in success and generous in defeat.

Once you commit yourself to a sport for a season, honour that commitment wholeheartedly and try to
get as much out of the experience as possible.
PARENTS
 Focus upon the girls’ efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the game.

Teach your daughter that an honest committed effort is as important as victory, so that the result of
the game is accepted without undue exuberance or disappointment.

Encourage your daughter to play according to the rules of the game and spirit of fair play at all times.

Never ridicule your daughter or another girl for making a mistake or losing a game.

Remember girls are involved in organised sports for their benefit and enjoyment, not yours.

Remember that children learn best from example. Applaud good play by both teams.

Raise any concerns you may have with officials through the appropriate channels rather than
questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. In every case you should contact the
relevant PDHPE/Sport staff member who will listen and then follow up on all reported situations.

Remember most officials give their time for your daughter’s benefit.

Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities.

Recognise the value and importance of coaches and give them your support.

Videoing or the taking of photographs at school sport is strictly prohibited, unless prior approval has
been granted by the school.

RAVENSWOOD SWIMMING CLUB 2015/2016 SEASON
SPECTATORS
 Ravenswood encourages girls to support their school teams and to be dressed in the school’s sports
uniform while doing so.

We look to adults to set good examples by their self-control, deportment and dress at matches.

We expect support to be enthusiastic but not to be fanatical or designed to heckle, belittle or disturb
the opponents. Booing, whistling or playing and beating musical instruments are in bad taste and are
unacceptable.

Support for any team should never encourage violence or rough or illegal play.

Good play from both teams should be applauded generously.

Encroaching onto the field of play or the shouting out of suggestions, disapproval or profanities to
players, officials or spectators is not acceptable.

The area around sporting venues should be left tidy and free of rubbish.
COACHES
 Recognise that games are for enjoyment.

Create a safe and fair environment by teaching the rules or laws of the game and employing a
transparent, objective selection policy.

Cultivate in your players a desire to win – which should motivate them towards excellence – and an
ability to deal with defeat constructively.

Develop in your players a respect for the ability of your opponents, as well as for the judgement of
officials.

Welcome the visiting coach, and encourage the Captain of the team to seek out the visiting Captain.

Be reasonable in your expectations of the players and in your demands upon them. Be sensitive to
the age, skill and physical maturity of your players.

Support and encourage players. Constructive advice should be focused on the mistake and not the
person.

Refrain from encroaching on the field while the game is in progress.

Be positive in all interactions with officials. Publicly expressing displeasure at the performance of
officials cultivates disrespect, an excuse culture in players and ill-feeling between School
communities.
