Sunshine and showers
Spring is finally in evidence as daffodils and flowering
trees start to bloom. Expect the inevitable April
showers this month, but with sunny days too, when
you can turn your attention to the lawn. It’s an
exciting month, with indoor-sown seeds well into
growth, and it’s also time to start sowing outdoors.
Just watch out for frosts! Now the soil is warming
up, you can begin to plant potatoes and hardy
vegetables (such as the brassica family) and summer
flowering herbaceous bulbs, corms, and tubers such
as lily, dahlia, and begonia.
In the Plant Market...
We have a fantastic range of nursery fresh shrubs, trees and
perennials in stock. Now is the perfect time to plant with a full
growing season ahead of you. We have a full range of roses from
traditional ranges to David Austin and Peter Beal’s. Our bedding
grower is almost ready to start shipping summer bedding plants
to us, so look out for them arriving in the plant market mid-April.

Green-fingered experts are coming
together to help amateur gardeners
grow something special for the Home
and Garden section at this summer’s
Moreton Show on September 2.
Leading the way will be Chris Small
from Stow-on-the-Wold, a prominent
local grower and judge, who will be
passing on his expertise between 11am
and 3pm on Easter Monday here at
Fosseway. Chris is chairman of the Stow
on the Wold Allotments Association
and is team leader of the vegetable
section at Moreton Show. The aim is to
demonstrate that gardening newcomers
and junior gardeners can grow and
prepare. And succeed!

• Feed roses and begin a regular spray program with rose clear or
multirose.
• Plant seed potatoes and onion sets outside and sow your tomato
seeds inside.

Bird care
In April, the day starts early and with a bang,
albeit a tuneful one. A male bird barely has time

the airwaves with his song, taking part in what we
call the dawn chorus. Once they have secured a
mate, frantic nest building and raising their young
commences. They need your help to survive and
