Jason Ross Kevin Lucas ANNOUNCEMENTS: President Eldon declared the 2007 Senior Picnic (well it was actually a fancy dinner at Dellwood) a tremendous success thanks to the hard work and organizational skills of Tim Geck and all the help from many Rotarians. This reporter has evidence that many of our seniors consider this event a highlight of the autumn. Thanks to all who helped! Speaking of helping seniors get out and have some fun, mark you calendar now for December 17th and 18th when we can join Bill Foussard as he hosts hundreds of seniors at "Dinner With Santa." Bill needs Santas in St. Cloud on the 17th and also in White Bear on the 18th. If you have helped in the past you know the routine so dig out your suit and sign up. If you have not joined in before, you don't know what you're missing! Scrounge up a Santa Suit and join Bill in St. Cloud or at the Country Inn. If you don't have a suit you can still help in many ways. This could be your highlight of the holiday season. It will help you get back to those warm feelings you remember about the holidays. Mark your calendar for the last weekend in January for our winter frolic on the lake and fundraiser for a great cause. Ken's group can use some help so if you are looking for a new thrill and involvement with a great group, contact Ken. Curt Akenson presented his classification talk (we may need to reclassify him) by explaining that his job has recently changed. Curt was born in St. Croix Falls, WI and despite having lived in MN for almost half his life he is still a Cheesehead. He earned his Bachelors degree from UW River Falls and a Master's in Business Administration from U of St. Thomas. His first job was with General Mills where he worked for 15 years. He joined Smiths Medical in St. Paul 1-1/2 years ago and recently promoted to St. Paul where he is director of operations. Smiths has 20 sites worldwide and is a producer of medical devices including ports, insulin pumps and infusion pumps. He showed a clip from a television program about Smiths and this reporter thinks he sounds pretty happy working at this job. Curt has been married to Jill for 17 years and they have three great children; Justin, 11, Allison, 9 and Erica, 6. Thanks for the up-date Curt and all your work with the club including fundraiser ticket sales, Club Service and Vocational Service. Rich Ramsey reminded the club that November is Rotary Month and he encouraged all our members to read the current edition of Rotarian Magazine and learn more about the good work of the Rotary Foundation and other news (if you can't find your November edition of Rotarian, you will find one at the library). Robb Olsen is giving club members a chance to be part of the last Strive Scholarship race of the season. The 10K run around the lake will be held at Noon on Sunday, November 4th. Rob needs road guards (you just have to keep runners going in the right direction) so a clipboard is going around. Volunteers need to arrive at 11:30 a.m. He also needs a few more sponsors. Sign up if you can (get your name on the t-shirt!) and want to help keep the Strive Scholarship going. Thanks to all who helped to collect food for the Food Shelf. Bryce Johnson JAMAICA TRIP OPPORTUNITY A TEAM FROM WBL ROTARY WILL GO TO JAMAICA (NOVEMBER 28-DEC 1) TO MEET WITH OUR “TWIN CLUB.” WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE INVOLVED? DISCUSSIONS WILL INCLUDE: WHAT IT MEANS TO TWIN; EVALUATION OF FUTURE PROJECTS. Contact Eldon DeWeerth for more details. NOVEMBER BIRTHDAYS November 2: Eldon DeWeerth November 3: Robb Olson November 9: Jeff Otto November 12: Rick Dunn THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: "I love the person that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but s/he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.” - Thomas Paine YOUTH EXCHANGE INBOUND STUDENTS Toms Malmeisters-Latvia Hosts: The Greg Bartz family 2732 S. Shore Blvd. White Bear Lake, MN 55110 651-426-9289 Ana Maria Flores Rodriguez Hosts: Vieman’s family 16585 Ingersoll Ave N Hugo, MN 55038 651-429-5234 e-mail: [email protected] SPEAKER: PAUL KURZWEG, ‘WAR IN IRAQ” Mike Campbell introduced his friend and neighbor, Paul Kurzweg, to describe his military service in Iraq. Paul explained that he is a life-long resident of White Bear Lake and that he joined the army right out of high school in 1977. During his first years in the service he met and married his wife and they have been together for over 26 years. After he returned from the Army, he joined the National Guard and has achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. On a Sunday in 2004 he received a call that his unit was being deployed to Iraq. They were attached to a Tennessee combat unit and underwent six months of training in Tennessee and California. They were deployed to Kuwait and entered Iraq on December 14, 2004. In convoy formation they worked their way to a forward operations base 90 miles Northeast of Baghdad. They experienced roadway explosives along the way and Paul attributes the fact that there were no resulting deaths to their training. His unit replaced a North Carolina unit and underwent two weeks of transitional training. Their assignment was to provide security for convoys and they were involved in many nighttime operations. They returned from Iraq in October of 2005. Paul witnessed an election during his service and he showed several photos of the conditions and equipment used in the war. The club extended a heartfelt thanks to Paul for his presentation and his service to our country. Writer of the Week: Mark Sather
