This work zone advances: • • • • • La Brea station excavation. Utility hanging from the deck. Dewatering system installation Maintenance of geotechnical instruments and dewatering wells. Restoration of street and sidewalk. Work to support excavation from the closure on Wilshire in progress 13 Deck Openings What: • • • • Deck openings are openings of the street-deck for the purpose of delivering materials for underground construction. Deck openings will be done at locations of the deck that are designed to open and close. Deck openings will occur periodically, as needed Deck panels are 8-ft by 14-ft When: • • Following La Brea decking, late 2016 Throughout the duration of the project How: • • Off-peak hours, (M-F, 9am-3:30pm, 7pm-6am) and Saturdays and Sundays. Traffic reduced to one lane each direction Example of a deck opening from underneath the deck 14 La Brea Station Construction Opportunity • Center Opening Concept 15 La Brea Station Center Opening Construction Concept What: • Establish a material handling shaft in the Wilshire Blvd. center median between Sycamore Ave. and Orange Dr., just east of La Brea in lieu of multiple intermittent closures and panel openings during excavation • Wilshire remains two lanes in each direction between La Brea and Mansfield • Left turns open on Wilshire at La Brea and Detroit in both directions Rendering of center opening. When: • Proposed January 2017 thru December 2017 How: • The work zone would be established using krail, fencing and sound blankets • Seeking community input Cross-section of center opening being used for excavation. 14 La Brea Station Center Opening Construction Concept Proposed Benefits : • For handling material in and out of the 1,000 ft. station during construction. • Safest method to accomplish work under deck from the street. • Limits lane reductions for deck openings, leaving a more consistent traffic pattern. • More robust noise mitigation for this method rather than for lane closures. • Assists traffic flow of hauling and decentralizes hauling from the La Brea staging yards. • Expedites station excavation and concrete work if in place. Wilshire two lanes in each direction. 15 La Brea Station Excavation • Now thru the Fall of 2017 • Work hours are 7am-11pm, 11pm-7am as needed • Excavation will occur under the concrete deck, with intrinsically safe equipment that’s been certified by the State of California • Excavation material will be removed from the staging yards at Wilshire/La Brea, loaded into trucks, and hauled using approved haul routes (SB La Brea to I-10) • Street level excavation has started as a part of decking – excavation and utility hanging under the deck will continue behind the closure on Wilshire through the Fall of 2016 Examples of the excavation and utility hanging underway for the Wilshire/La Brea station 18 Jet Grouting *Dates and work activities subject to change Overview • • Jet grouting is a construction process that uses high-pressure air and grout to create a deep soil-concrete block The purpose of jet grouting is to reinforce and strengthen the soil with concrete to support tunneling and cross-passage construction Locations • • • • Jet Grouting will occur at 16 locations along Wilshire between La Cienega and Western There will be no more than two jet-grouting operations being performed at one time Approximately 6 weeks at each location Work hours M-F 7am-9pm, Sat 8am-6pm Schedule • • • • Wilshire between Orange and Mansfield-Completed Wilshire between Rossmore and Lucerne- Underway Wilshire between Arden and Muirfield – anticipated start Nov. 2016 Wilshire between Plymouth and Windsor – anticipated start December 2016 • Construction notices will be sent and outreach will be conducted for each location Workers begin jet grouting at Wilshire Blvd near Rossmore 19 Jet Grouting Activities and Layout Work Activities • Potholing, street level excavation , vertical drilling , trucking, cement silos, pumps, generators Layout • Concrete Barriers placed on the middle lanes of Wilshire Blvd • Lanes reduced to two lanes each direction at jet grouting locations • Bus stops will be temporarily relocated as required • Wilshire BRT lane not enforced in these areas during jet grouting • Intermittent material deliveries during off peak hours. 20 Fairfax Station Rendering shows length of the Fairfax underground station box on Wilshire Blvd from west of Fairfax to just west of Ogden Dr. 21 Purple Line Extension Wilshire/Fairfax Station Schedule *Schedule is subject to change. Traffic will travel on the installed deck panels while the station is constructed underground Fairfax Station: – Approx. 800 feet long – Approx. 70 feet wide – Approx. 60 feet deep Will follow pile operations; anticipated to begin January 2017 Additional activities under decking closures: piling, temporary civil improvements.
