instruments and dewatering
wells.
Restoration of street and

13
Deck Openings
What:
•
•
•
•
Deck openings are openings of the street-deck for
the purpose of delivering materials for underground
construction.
Deck openings will be done at locations of the deck
that are designed to open and close.
Deck openings will occur periodically, as needed
Deck panels are 8-ft by 14-ft
When:
•
•
Following La Brea decking, late 2016
Throughout the duration of the project

La Brea Station
Construction Opportunity
• Center Opening Concept
15
La Brea Station
Center Opening Construction Concept
What:
• Establish a material handling shaft in the
Wilshire Blvd. center median between
Sycamore Ave. and Orange Dr., just east of La
Brea in lieu of multiple intermittent closures
and panel openings during excavation
• Wilshire remains two lanes in each direction
between La Brea and Mansfield
• Left turns open on Wilshire at La Brea and
Detroit in both directions
Rendering of center opening.
When:
• Proposed January 2017 thru December 2017
How:
• The work zone would be established using krail, fencing and sound blankets
• Seeking community input
Cross-section of center opening being used
for excavation.
14
La Brea Station
Center Opening Construction Concept
Proposed Benefits :
•
For handling material in and out of the
1,000 ft. station during construction.
•
Safest method to accomplish work under
deck from the street.
•
Limits lane reductions for deck openings,
leaving a more consistent traffic pattern.
•
More robust noise mitigation for this
method rather than for lane closures.
•
Assists traffic flow of hauling and
decentralizes hauling from the La Brea
staging yards.
•
Expedites station excavation and concrete
work if in place.
Center opening work zone on Wilshire between Sycamore and Mansfield. Wilshire two lanes in each direction.
15
La Brea Station Excavation
•
Now thru the Fall of 2017
•
Work hours are 7am-11pm, 11pm-7am as
needed
•
Excavation will occur under the concrete
deck, with intrinsically safe equipment that’s
been certified by the State of California
•
Excavation material will be removed from the
staging yards at Wilshire/La Brea, loaded into
trucks, and hauled using approved haul routes
(SB La Brea to I-10)
•
Street level excavation has started as a part of
decking – excavation and utility hanging under
the deck will continue behind the closure on
Wilshire through the Fall of 2016
Examples of the excavation and
utility hanging underway for the
Wilshire/La Brea station
