What is a function?
A function is a relation, or mapping, for
which each input has exactly one output.

We will call the valid input values of a
function the domain and the resulting
output values the range.
In our previous example, the domain
consisted of the numbers -2, 0, 4 and
the range consisted of the numbers
4,7,9

October 15, 2014
If we have the graph of an equation, we can determine if the relation is a function by using the Vertical Line Test (VLT)
The Vertical Line Test tells us a relation is a function if and only if no vertical line intersects the graph of the relation at more than one point. 7
