In this lab, you will be making 4 different concentrations of Kool Aid solution to determine the “ideal” amount of sugar in
Kool Aid. In chemistry, concentration is usually measured by the number of moles of substance dissolved in a liter of a
solution. This is called molarity and is expressed as mol/L or M (The formula is: M = moles/Liter).

Sample problem 1:
If we had 1.00 mole of sucrose C12H22O11 (342 grams) and dissolved it to make 1 liter
of sugar water. What would be the molarity of this solution?

Molarity = 1.00Moles = 1.00 mol/L = 1.00 M

Answer: 1.00 mol/L = 1.00 M
Sample problem 2:
What is the molarity if you dissolve 256.73 grams of sucrose C12H22O11 in 2.50 L of solution? First, find out the
number of moles.
256.73 g sucrose X 1 mole = 0.75 moles
342.3 g
Molarity = 0.75 Moles = 0.300 mol/L = 0.300 M
2.50 Liters
Answer: 0.300 mol/L = 0.300 M.
Sample problem 3:
How many grams of sucrose C12H22O11 would you dissolve in 0.1 L of water to make a 2 M sucrose solution?
First, figure out how many moles you will need. Then convert from moles to grams.
Molarity = Moles
Liters
2 M = Moles
0.1 L
Solve for moles
2 M X 0.1 L = 0 .2 Moles
Convert from moles to grams
0 .2 Moles C12H22O11 X 342 grams = 68.4 grams
1 mole
Answer: Dissolve 68.4 grams of C12H22O11 in 0.1 Liters to make a 2 M solution.
