Marshals’ Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of
a Marshal is to ensure the safety
of the spectators. Golf can be a
dangerous game and it is important
that Marshals only allow spectators
to stand or walk in the designated
areas – behind the lines of red
rope and white metal stakes or
between the white lines on a
Fairway Crossing.
The rope lines are there to ensure
the spectators are close enough
to get a good view of the action yet
far enough away to be safe.
a) Keep spectators behind ropes.
Make sure they do not move
forward through the ropes nor cut
corners. Please avoid obstructing
spectators’ views.

b) All Marshals will be issued with a
handbat saying ‘Quiet Please’ and
‘No Cameras’. These should be
raised whenever a player goes to
address the ball prior to taking his
shot. This is to ensure that all the
spectators stand still and remain
silent while the shot is played.
‘Watch your shadow’.
c) Encourage spectators to walk,
not run.
d) Mobile phones are NOT permitted
unless in designated areas.
e) Cameras / video recorders are
not permitted from Thursday
to Sunday inclusive.
f) Do not speak to a player unless
spoken to and on no account
should they be asked for
autographs.
Emergencies
In the event of an emergency
requiring assistance contact the
Chief Marshal via the Hole Controller
or the nearest official with a radio.
a) Before a Marshal goes on to the
course he or she should familiarise
himself/herself with the location
of the First Aid Post.
b) If help is available nearby, summon
it at once. Then, without delay,
report the problem to the Sector
Marshal or the Chief Marshal.
c) If other help is needed, summon
it by radio via the nearest Score
Reporter / Leaderboard Operator
/ Official, who will relay it to
Score Control / Chief Marshal /
Championship Office. Walking
Score Reporters will accompany
EVERY game on all four days of the
Championship. Leaderboards are
located at the following holes:
5, 8, 9, 11/13, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18.
Media
No one should be allowed inside the
ropes, other than the players, their
caddies and the European Tour Rules
Officials, unless they are wearing
an appropriate ARMBAND.
a) Media & Photographers have
been issued with armbands and
instructed on courtesy to players
during play.
b) Please ensure that Media
& Photographers obey these
instructions. If an individual FAILS
to comply, advise them to do so:
if they refuse, note the number on
their numbered armband. Report
it to the Hole or Sector Marshal
who will relay it to the Chief
Marshal’s office.

On the Golf Course
Tees
1) Pay particular attention to areas of
likely disturbance/movement e.g.
adjacent crossings; tracks near
the tee.
2)Keep spectators still and quiet until
players have driven.
3)Signal by hand (to Marshals ahead)
the direction of a drive that is going
astray. If the ball looks like it is going
over the ropes into the spectators
shout a warning. Eg ‘Fore Right’.
4)There will be advertising boards and
signs placed around the course. All
Marshals should ensure that these
boards are in clear view of the TV
cameras and are not obstructed by
officials, photographers and other
Marshals. Please do not place bags
in front of the advertising boards.
Landing Areas
1) Watch for any signal from the
Tee Marshal.
2)Guard the ball if it finishes outside
the ropes.
3) If necessary, start to move spectators
away from the ball and the line to the
hole; give the player plenty of room.
Marshals_Guide_2014_V4.indd 6-7
With the rope down spectators will
tend to push in close to get a better
view, but it is vitally important in this
situation that every effort is made to
keep them a SAFE distance from the
player and his intended line of play.
4)Move ropes and stakes at the player’s
request: replace them after the shot.
Crossings
1) Spectators must be kept within
the white lines; they must be kept
moving and should be encouraged
to keep to the left. They should walk
briskl and not run.
Thank You...
4)Safety is vital. Regularly inspect
the staircase and handrails on all
Grandstands/Sky Boxes. Report any
defects to the Hole Controller who
should then pass the information to
the Chief Marshal.
1) Make sure all access ramps and/
or staircases are clear. Standing on
ramps, stairways or in the gangways
is NOT PERMITTED. Spectators MUST
be seated.
2)Encourage spectators to be quiet
generally and silent during play.
3)Allow movement only when play
is not affected.
Greens
4)Deal promptly with unruly behaviour,
loud, unpleasant jeering comes
under this heading. If necessary,
alert the Hole Controller.
2)Ensure that there is no disturbance
or movement until all players
have putted.
3)Make sure the player exit is clear and
once play has concluded on the green
ensure the players have clear access
to the next tee.
