Jefferson to explore the Louisiana Territory and lands west of it to the Pacific Ocean. ● William Clark coleader of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. ● Sacagawea Shoshone woman who assisted the Lewis & Clark expedition. “The name is a compound of two common Hidatsa nouns , cagáàga [tsaɡ áàɡ a] 'bird' and míà [míà] 'woman'. The compound is written as Cagáàgawia 'Bird Woman' in modern Hidatsa orthography , and pronounced [tsaɡ áàɡ awia] (/m/ is pronounced [w] between vowels in Hidatsa). The double /aa/ in the name indicates a long vowel and the diacritics a falling pitch pattern. Hidatsa is a pitchaccent language that does not have stress, therefore in the Hidatsa pronunciation all syllables in [tsaɡ áàɡ awia] are pronounced with roughly the same relative emphasis.” (YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW ALL THE DETAILS OF THE EXPLANATION ABOVE ABOUT SACAGAWEA JUST THE ITALICIZED PART.) ● Zebulon Pike leader of a southern expedition in the Louisiana Territory. 2.
