The tail of the two Chihuahua's - Jasper and Gary
Financial Report
Various Dog Stories
Calendars
Jasper came into K9 around 4 years ago, he was around 4 years
old and had been taken into a Vet near Byford, with his
chihuahua breeding partner to be euthanized. The Vet was
horrified and gave K9 a call, and we picked them up.
Neither were used to human hands or kindness and the female
was easy to rehome as she was very submissive. Not so Jasper,
he hated humans, especially men and children, and was very vicious. Thankfully he liked me,
and I brought him home. Jasper actually liked other dogs and cats, and after a while accepted
my son.

Through the course of 3 years Jasper was rehomed 5 times. He loved each owner and they in
return loved him, but when a friend or family member came to visit, he bit them. In between
homes he went into foster care with Bev and Tina {he loved them}. Jasper’s last owner's
partner had heart surgery, so when Jasper bit him they returned him to K9 fearing the worst
for Jasper. I have to say, Jasper has made more money than any other dog for K9, because all
the owners donated the adoption fees of Jasper. I am happy to say Jasper is living his days out
with Tina, whom he adores.
Gary who is 3 came to K9 because he did not like children and did not like men and did not
like other dogs. It’s quite funny because Jasper and Gary not only look alike but are alike. Gary
has been in foster care with Bev, and they say he is adorable. He is dog social, he had just
never been given the chance to be! Gary like Jasper, would love living with a female, with
whom he can share his love and devotion.
It must have been quite a sight to see 2 adorable Chihuahua's walking alongside each other
with Bev, down on Mandurah Foreshore. No one would have known that they are "not dog
social, hated humans and were dogs with no hope!" Jasper has a home for life, and Gary is
now in foster care, with hopefully his forever owner.
That's the magic of K9 - rescuing dogs.
Christmas Wrapping
Christmas is fast approaching and help is required for Christmas
wrapping at Warnbro and Mandurah.
This event raises a lot of money for K9, so please get in touch
with Natasha Scott on [email protected] if you wish to
help out this year. Even if it’s a couple of hours a week.

A message from the President
Hi All,
It has been very busy
at K9 Land, over the
last few months.
We have just had our
2016 AGM, and I
would
like
to
introduce you to the
new Committee, Carol
Camplin – Secretary,
Rhona
Donovan,
Teresa Smith, Linda
Cruden, Duncan Pratt and Janine Matthews.
We are currently advertising for a Treasurer. A very big
thank you to Yvonne Jones, who is our past Treasurer,
for keeping our finances and book keeping in order, in
the interim.
It was great to see Vicki Pollard, who is the Manager of
Peel Volunteer Resource Centre at the AGM. It will
give Vicki great insight in to what we need at K9. Thank
you Vicki for coming along.
Graeme Cox our Building and Projects Manager, who is
always busy around K9, is renovating our small
exercise yard, so that it is in keeping with the rest of
our yards and buildings. Graeme has just finished the
painting of our small kennels, with the help of Alcoa.
We are currently looking for assistance around the
grounds and with maintenance at K9, we would
welcome any help. If anyone is interested please get in
touch with Duncan, so that he can liaise with Graeme
and Mike.
We now have four working computers in the office,
this is thanks to Daniel, who is a computer specialist,
Foster Carers
Thank you to all our wonderful foster carers. It is not
easy fostering a dog, but very rewarding, for both the
carer and the dog. I cannot tell you how glad I am, that
so many Volunteers have now got on board.
Foster Care is simply what it says. The dogs that come
into this Scheme, may be sick, cannot handle kennels,
and are easily rehabilitated. We are always looking for
Foster Carers - can you do this??
and also has an ex K9 dog. Daniel is donating his
services.
The K9 van we were using has now gone down to
Rhona, who operates K9 Southwest. This will make
travel for Rhona and her dogs a lot easier. Rhona
does a great job rehoming dogs (all out of foster
care) and fundraising.
Our new Fundraising Team are doing an excellent
job. Sonia will be looking for Volunteers with the
Xmas wrapping in Mandurah and Warnbro, so if
anyone would like to help, please get in touch with
Sonia.
We had a special service in our Garden of
Remembrance for Goldie and Ella. This was lovely
and involved many of the Vollies who knew Ella
and Goldie. Their ashes were spread in their home,
K9. RIP Ella and Goldie.
A big thank to all our Volunteers, for making K9
what it is, a Rescue for all our dogs. To Mike, Kel
and Caitlyn, who are employed by K9, thank you
for your tireless work, and for all the volunteer
hours that you all do as well.
We have a new Editor of our Yaps and Yarns –
Carol Camplin. Liz is working alongside Carol, and
although I know you will both do an amazing job,
on behalf of K9, thank you Carol and Liz.
To all our Members, Volunteers and Supporters,
on behalf of our dogs, a heartfelt thank you. On
behalf of the Committee, I would like to wish you a
happy Xmas and a safe and prosperous New Year.

Carol Carter, President
COLLECTION BINS
A great big thank you to all our loyal supporters
who donate to the doggies via our donation bins
which are situated at various locations.
Unfortunately we had to remove the ones at the
Mandurah Forum during their renovations and one
was put at the IGA in Halls Head.
However, they said they were short of space
leading up to Christmas so that has been removed
until the new year.
Currently we have bins at Coles in Pinjarra, Coles in
Warnbro and Better Pets in Port Kennedy.

Bingo/Halloween Night
So Halloween has come and gone but what a memorable year 2016 was. The Halloween bingo
night was a huge success. We raised a fantastic $5,120. This wouldn’t have been possible
without the companies below who donated to K9. A big scream out to them. Plus the lovely Mary from Meadow
Springs who donated her hair raising decorations. Please be sure to visit her house over Christmas for the
beautiful Christmas display she does every year; address 8 Meadow Springs Drive.
Again the Bingo Night couldn’t have taken place without the wonderful volunteers, Natasha Scott, Emma
Shufflebotham, Leah Dreaden, Sarah Goddard, Duncan Pratt, Evelyn Stem, Rhona Donovan, Cornelia Zweifel,
Yvonne Jones and not forgetting the AMAZING MC Jesse Burford.
The last few events we have attended have again proven to be a huge success with dogs finding their forever
home.

Fundraising
From the Fundraising Coordinator
It’s that time of the year when everyone is thinking where did 2016 go? Christmas
is only 8 weeks away…. So it’s that time of the year when the Fundraising team
need your help to bring a festive cheer and join Warnbro or Mandurah Shopping
Centre by wrapping Christmas presents for a gold coin donation. This event
raises a lot of money for K9 so please contact Sonia at
[email protected] and offer your time. Even if you can only
complete one shift a week we welcome your time. Let’s see if we can raise more
than 2015.
The Fundraising coordinator wishes to thank all the volunteers who give up their spare time to come
along to events at the weekend. Every dog who has attended these events has found their forever home.
The dogs also have a fantastic day out. It’s great to see them out of the kennels loving life. This wouldn’t
be possible without our volunteers. Please contact Sonia on [email protected] if you
would like to be part of the team.

K9 Rescue Southwest
Hi Everyone
It has been an average month as far as dogs go…a lot more people are claiming
their dogs in the pound, which is a good thing & less to re-home. Private
surrenders have been less as of late as well, so maybe our message is getting out
there, that dogs are a part of the family and not to be given up so easily.
The Southwest has been ticking along nicely but unfortunately our Collection tins
are raising less & less due to the numerous other “donation tins” out there. I just
ask that you please keep donating as “any” amount helps our worthwhile cause.
Our calendars will be on sale very soon so I will be doing the local markets again, now that the weather
has improved and selling them there. They will also be available through our very generous sponsor “FLEA
BUSTERS” Pete & Donna Cain “Dirty Dogs Done Dirt Cheap” who obviously wash dogs and “Doggie Styles”
will also be helping to sell our calendars. They are still only $10 and make a great Xmas gift or New Year
pressie.
Thanks again to everyone who fosters, volunteers and supports K9 Rescue, we really appreciate it all and
would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Very Happy Christmas and New Year. Stay Safe and
Be Happy….From Rhona - K9 Rescue SW Coordinator

Financial Report
K9’s accounts for the
2016 financial year
were presented at
the recent AGM and
for the first time in
the 9 or 10 years I’ve
been
volunteering
with K9 we have
presented a financial
loss for the year. The mining boom has ended
and many charities are struggling.
fantastic team co-ordinated by Sonia although I’m
sure Sonia would love to have more helpers.
The Quiz Night was a sell out and everyone had
a great night and I’m sure the Bingo Night will be
too.
The expenses are similar to the previous
financial year but almost all aspects of our
income were substantially lower in many cases
about 30% lower.
This is no-ones fault.
Everyone at K9 works incredibly hard. But we
do have to address this down turn in K9’s
income.
One source of income that has made a big
difference to K9 over the last few years is
bequests. This can be a sensitive subject as K9’s
financial benefit has meant that someone has
passed away and family and friends have lost a
loved one. For K9 these bequests have meant
so much – one generous bequest got us “across
the line” with funding for the new kennel block,
other bequests have gone towards a new van or
to cover expensive operations for dogs in need
or towards the everyday running of K9 and
caring for the dogs.
Adoptions are down. Although the number of
dogs being surrendered and left at the pounds is
never ending the number of people adopting is
down.
The end of the mining boom meant jobs were
lost and even though people support K9 they
don’t have the disposable income they may have
had during the boom consequently donations
are down substantially.
For several months of the year we didn’t have a
fundraising team. Fortunately now we have a
The fundraising team also attend many events
that may not bring in a lot of money but they do
provide an opportunity to meet people and
explain what K9 does which is also very
important.
If you are making or renewing your will please
consider including K9 Rescue as your legacy
large or small, will make a big difference to K9
and the dogs we care for. K9 has been rescuing
dogs for over 25 years and with your help we
can continue for another 25 years or until we
are no longer needed because every dog has a
loving home.

Success Story : Blacky
Hello K9,
Just thought we would send an email to say "thank you" for all the work you do, and for our beautiful boy
"Oscar" aka "Blacky". He is starting to settle in well, and has been a wonderful addition to our family.
He has been a dream to bring
home, loved the car ride, friendly
to anyone (dogs and humans),
loves to be around us but also
starting to enjoy his own
company now. We feel so lucky
and happy to have found such a
beautiful canine soul, and he
really seems to love being in his
new home. Thanks again.
Warm regards
Penny and Sebastian

Volunteer Profile - Janine Matthews
I have been volunteering at K9 for over 9 months and love it so
much, I cannot imagine it not being a part of my life now. I come in
to K9 twice a week and my main duty is to keep on top of all the
mountains of washing that keep appearing in the laundry, every
time I turn around another one appears, and I assist in the kitchen
when needed.
I’m not strong enough to be a dog walker so I look after the little
dogs when they come in and many a morning you will spot me in
the puppy pen with a littlie perched on my knee having cuddles and
me whispering in their ear.
I am a Reiki healer, and also sit with the bigger dogs talking softly
and offering them some good calming energy and help them settle
in the stressful unfamiliar environment. One of the other
volunteers used to call me ‘the lady with the chair’.
Outside K9 I am a full time Assemblage Sculptor, upcycling other
peoples rubbish or ‘roadside treasures’ as I call them - I just lurv
rubbish collection time.
I also pull old watches and clocks apart and combined with old jewellery, make a range of Steampunk
earrings, pendants, bracelets and other stuff.
Working with the dogs is my balancing energy, I get as much back from them as I give.
2017 CALENDAR
Once again our Calendar has been a huge success and we are indebted to STUDIO NOAH
(www.studionoah.com.au ) who donate their time to photograph the dogs.
We want to pay a special thanks to all the dogs and their owners who took part in the
2017 calendar
The calendars are available right now around the Pinjarra, Mandurah and Rockingham areas at small
businesses, at fundraising events or at the K9 office itself.
All proceeds from the calendars go directly to the dogs with their vet care and food and any of their other
requirements.
A huge thankyou to the businesses that have sponsored a month in the k9 calendar for 2017 and we look
forward to working with you in the near future.

Thank You Reese
We would like to thank Reese Chapman for making these wonderful dog cookies to sell, raising money for
our dogs.
Reese, a year 8 student at Peter Carnley Anglican School, had an assignment to do something for a nonprofit organisation and she chose K9 as she loves dogs.
She also chose K9 as her Nan, Teresa Smith, has been volunteering at K9 for many years and has said that
when she is old enough she wants to do the same.
Reese raised $63.50 selling her cookies in the office at K9.
JUDAS (was Franklin)
Hi, my name is Judas, or as you may remember me,
Franklin and I have been in my new home now for just
over 2 months.
A lot has changed for me, as I have 2 mummy's who
love me, and a human sister who is my best friend. We
get up to some mischief together but it is all so much
fun.
My new family has been working really hard to train me
and now I am able to go for walks to take my sister to
school, swimming at the beach and even car rides! I like
to watch the other cars drive past. We go to McDonald's
and I get my favourite ice cream.
I like to sleep on my mums or my sister or sometimes I
just steal the couch.
My manners are improving so much and I am finally
putting on some weight.
I am no longer afraid of loud noises or large groups of
people.
I love my new life so from all of us, thank you K9 Rescue
for giving me a second chance.
P.S my favourite game is to chase and eat flies.
Me and my sister before our walk to school
I like to swim
at the beach
and bark at
the waves
