October Birthdays
In astrology, those born between
October 1st and 22nd balance the
scales of Libra. Libras seek equality,
justice, and harmony. Eager to
cooperate, Libras are charming
diplomats who seek compromise and
good will. Those born between
October 23rd and 31st are Scorpios.
Scorpios are passionate and assertive
leaders who value honesty and
fairness. Befriend a Scorpio and you
will have a lifelong advocate and
confidant.

Bridging the Generational Gap
School is back in full swing and we
are excited to welcome a new class
of 4 year old TLC preschoolers to
Windsor Manor.
It is fun to see the interaction as
these little ones begin to recognize
their new friends each month.
The last Wednesday of every
month Nancy Schmitz takes the
Windsor Manor bus out to TLC
preschool and returns with a bus
full of excited youngsters.
The M-W-F morning students,
accompanied by their teachers’ Gail
Gerber and Joyce Schueler, join
our residents for crafts, games, and
song.

Gaudy by Design
Delve deep into your closet and find
something gaudy to wear on
October 17, Wear Something
Gaudy Day. Gaudy typically refers
to clothing or accessories that are
flashy and unfashionable. But even
fashion experts wonder, “Is gaudy
ever good?” Sometimes wearing a
little bit of flash makes you feel
fabulous. As Shelly Adams, owner
of the “A Little Bit Gaudy” boutique,
says, gaudy is just “fashion with
attitude.” Fashion experts assert
that clothes often reflect how we
feel about ourselves and can even
make us feel better, smarter, and
more empowered. So, if your style
is one with a bit of pizzazz, then
perhaps that’s just a reflection of
your booming confidence.
Enchantress of Numbers
Ada Byron was born in
1815, the daughter of
famed English poet
Lord Byron and Anne
Isabelle Milbanke. Ada’s
mother, Lady Byron,
wanted Ada to be
wholly different from her
father. Instead of
poetry, Ada was tutored
in mathematics. Her
intellect was apparent
by age 12 when she
designed a flying
machine. Her skill and
contributions in her field

own holiday, Ada
Lovelace Day on
October 11, a day to
celebrate all women in
the fields of science,
technology,
engineering, and
mathematics.
Ada was raised in an
era when there weren’t
professional scientists.
When Ada grew up, she
befriended a man
dabbling in math and
science named Charles
Babbage. The two often
discussed their ideas of
math and logic.
Ada became known as
Ada, Countess of
Lovelace, in 1838, after
marrying William King,
Earl of Lovelace. It was
not long after her
marriage that her old
friend Charles Babbage
sought her help with his
newest invention, a
