Plans begin for next year’s balloons event
BY JENNIFER BAILEY

DANVILLE – The dates haven’t been set for
2017 yet, but Balloons Over Vermilion had a
successful start this year, organizers say.
The first annual hot air balloon event in
Vermilion County in 15 years had initial estimates of crowds at more than 20,000 for the
Friday and Saturday event earlier this month.
Estimates show about 6,000 patrons on the
night of July 15 and more than 14,000 people
throughout July 16’s events.

“They saw a need for a teen
show,” Schroeder said. “After
junior high, their choices
were either at school or in
adult shows. We think the
idea was wildly successful
based on the number of kids
at the auditions. We hope it’s
something we can continue.”
Schroeder said advance
ticket sales have been solid,
with almost half of the seats
already reserved.
Audience members can
come out to the theater early
to be a part of “pre-show shenanigans” such as having
their photos taken with cast
members, sign the Class of
1959 yearbook and other activities.
Also, at 5 p.m. Saturday,
those interested can purchase
a backstage pass for $5 that
will give them entry to a
45-minute program where
they will see how makeup is
applied, tour the stage, learn
about props and costumes,
and possibly dance with cast
members. Cast member Katie
Weston drew caricatures of
the leads, which have been
reproduced as coloring pages
for children.
“It’s been fun to watch them
grow,” Schroeder said. “It’s
been encouraging to be a part
of the creative process with
these teenagers. It’s been fun
to watch them grow with
their characters and to make
them their own.”
