Project Title
Sound Blockers

This project is all about different sound
Description of
the Project
insulators with different types of materials such as:
foam, cling film, cotton and fabric, which will be put
into shoe boxes.
We also made string telephones (Ring ring string)
using paper cups ,string.
1
Introduction
Why did you do the project?
We started this project because we wanted to find out how we can
block out sound and see what material is the best sound insulator.
We decided to make our own sound insulation boxes and a string
telephone to investigate sound.
What did you hope to learn?
We hoped to learn how sound travels and how string telephones
could be used to send sound messages.
During our project we looked at 3 aspects of sound:
1 Communication using string telephones was our first experiment
2 Blocking out sound using a variety of materials inside boxes
2
3 What are “echoes”?
Experimental methods
String telephone using paper cups:
We collected the materials and made a string telephone using
cups and string.
We investigated whether the length of the string made a
difference to the sound. We found out that the sound
travelled the same through the short or the long string!
Sound insulation boxes:
We got cotton wool, cling film, tin foil and fabric and put
them in a box and got a speaker in and played some music and
listen to which was the best block out sound.

Main information

Using the string telephones we found out that:
·
The sound is carried from one cup to the other
through the vibration in the string.
·
It didn’t matter whether the string was long or short. It
still carried the sound waves the same.
·
If you put a knot in the string the sound doesn’t
travel as well. This is because some of the sound
vibrations are blocked by the knot in the string.
Using the sound insulator boxes we found out that:
Not all materials are effective sound insulators. Usually the
thicker the material the better the sound insulator it is. We
lined each shoe box with a different material to check how
well they blocked out sound from a electronic game. We also
left one box unlined to act as a fair test.
Cling film does not really block out sound
Tin-foil didn’t really work either.
5
Foam is quite a good sound insulator – it blocked out most of
the sound.
Cotton wool was the best sound insulator. It blocked out
nearly all of the sound.
The results were not what we expected. We thought that the
cotton wool would block out the sound completely.
6
Conclusions –
Sound can travel through many materials easily. However the
thicker the material the better. For that reason sound travels
better through water.
● Sound is a form of energy that travels in waves or
vibrations.
● Rice will bounce on a speaker when you turn up the
volume. This is because the sound vibrations are
strong enough to make the rice move.
● Some materials allow sound through others are
sound insulators.
● String phones work best when the string is
straight.
What did you enjoy most while doing the project?
● We enjoyed this project because it was fun to
make the cup telephones. We also liked

investigating which was the best material to use
to block out sound.
Acknowledgements A big huge Thank You to our teacher Ms Brosnan she is a
wonderful teacher to us and Ms McAndrew for giving up her
time to take us out and making sure that we did something.
We would like to thank Sarah’s Mum for helping us get the
equipment needed for the experiments. We would like to
thank Darragh’s parents also for letting us bring in the ipod
for the sound insulator boxes. We would also like to thank
James’ dad and mam for helping us with the project.
