The Rocky River
Education Foundation
Mission Statement
The purpose of The Rocky River
Education Foundation shall be to
enrich and provide added quality to
the educational experience in our
community; to encourage further
development of specialized talents,
skills and academic achievements
for individual students, faculty
or administrators; to continue
the educational traditions that
have contributed to Rocky River’s
reputation as an outstanding
suburban community.
The Rocky River Education
Foundation is a non-profit, 501(c)
(3) corporation directed by a Board
of Trustees organized for the
purpose of soliciting contributions
to fund teacher grants in the Rocky
River City School District. The
Foundation also administers financial
awards through 36 individually
designated scholarship funds.
O
n behalf of the entire Board of the
Rocky River Education Foundation,
I would like to thank all of our
friends and supporters and the staff and
administration of Rocky River City Schools for
helping make last year a resounding success for
the Foundation. Once again, we have had many
accomplishments thanks to your commitment
and dedication. Our Foundation moved
forward on many fronts and continues to lay
the groundwork for even greater successes in
the future.
Our annual Fundraiser last March, “A Night
on the Town,” was a special evening for all. The
event was a sellout success for the Foundation.
I would to recognize and thank our Presenting
Sponsor, First Federal of Lakewood, for
their generous support of the event and our
Foundation. I also want to thank and recognize
our Event Sponsors, Brindza, McIntyre and
Seed LLP, Legacy Capital Partners, The Soter
Group at Morgan Stanley, Squire Sanders
(US) LLP and Western Reserve Partners LLC,
as well as our corporate sponsors, David &
Elaine Cook and Thompson Hine LLP. A
very special “thank you” goes out to our CoChairs, Kerry Capka and Kendal Purohit, and
the entire Fundraising Committee for putting
together such a fabulous night. Don’t miss next
year’s event on March 21, 2015 at Westwood
Country Club!
For the 2013-2014 school year, we hit a
record high of grant funding of over $48,000.
Students, teachers and staff from every
school in the District benefitted from our
efforts. Here are just a few highlights: First
at Goldwood, we were able to grant a large
amount towards the fabulous new Goldwood
Playground. At Kensington, we were able
to double our grant amount to the library
for the purchase of brand new biographies.
The Middle school was able to benefit from
several grants including participation in the
National History Day Program which allowed
the students some impressive awards and
recognition. Among the several grants that
helped support educational activities at the
high school included assisting in the expansion
of the choral music library. The funding for all
of the grants awarded last year is solely due to
your contributions.
In addition to our grant program, RREF
kicked off funding efforts for the Rocky River
City Schools Speaker Series. The foundation
had a special fundraising effort at its annual
auction in March and raised just under $15,000
for the RRCS Speaker Series to bring authors
and or speakers to our schools annually
through the district.
The Foundation awarded $45,000 in
scholarships that we administer to graduating
seniors at the High School Awards Assembly
last May. I want to personally thank all of
our scholarship donors, many of whom set up
scholarships with us in remembrance of loved
ones. Your dedication to helping the students
of Rocky River pursue their dreams and
aspirations is to be applauded and commended.
Please visit our website at rredfoundation.org
and our Facebook page to see what is going
on with the Foundation, and look for more
content this year.
Finally, I am excited to report that we have
over $39,000 available for grants during the
current school year. We will award grants in
November and March and cannot wait to
see the creativity, passion and energy of our
teachers and staff that shine through in the
grant applications. Thank you for helping this
Foundation have such a positive impact on the
students in the Rocky River City Schools as
well as the Rocky River Community. Let’s keep
the momentum growing!
Thank You,
Michelle M. Pike

Make your own Homemade
Gingerbread House! It’s great
family fun!
It is easy to do with our preassembled Gingerbread House and kit.
The kit includes: preassembled house, candy and frosting.
Susan was a French teacher at Rocky River High School but she
earned her living by touching students’ lives. She was also the second
oldest of eight children. Each holiday season her mother would
carefully bake and assemble a family gingerbread house. They would
gather together and decorate the home for the table centerpiece.
The smell of gingerbread and candy was very tempting but everyone
knew no picking until after the New Year. This family tradition has
given Susan’s siblings such joyful memories that they would like to
share it with others!
These homes are made from scratch, assembled and packaged by
family members. Deliveries can be be made right to your doorstep.
Pre assembled homemade gingerbread houses are available in a
variety of sizes. Kits can also be purchased including everything you
need to start decorating a unique holiday tradition.. They are great
for gifts or a group decorating party!
One hundred percent of the profits from the sales of the gingerbread
houses will go to the Susan Thibo Scholarship Fund.

Speaker Series
RREF kicked off funding efforts for the Rocky River City
Schools Speaker Series at its annual auction/dinner in March.
RRCS has been fortunate to have noted authors Loung Ung
(First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers)
in 2012 and and James Swanson (Manhunt: The 12 Day Chase
for Lincoln’s Killer) (2013) speak to the student body and the
community as part of RRHS’s summer reading program. The
“the summer reading speaker provides an exceptional opportunity
for our students who get to hear first-hand the vision and process
that goes into writing,” says RRHS English Department Chair
Stephanie Minotti.
National History Day
A Success For RRCS’s
Students
Thanks to an RREF grant,
RRMS’s inaugural National
History Day (NHD) program
competed and excelled in the
district competition.
The NHD program allows
history to come alive for
RRMS students by engaging
them in the discovery of
American History. This 8th
grade after-school project
challenges student teams to
build and present an exhibit on
an American History topic of
their choice, as guided by the
RRMS social studies teachers
and tutor Frank O’Grady. NHD inspires students through exciting
competitions and transforms teaching through project-based curriculum
and instruction.
We congratulate the 6th grade NHD team for its first place award
in exhibit design for its exhibit “Japanese American Internment Act
(1942).” Team members advanced to the state competition in Columbus,
Ohio, where, although they did not place, they enjoyed the competition
as RRMS’s first ever gold medal team. Further accolades go to the silver
medal winners for their exhibit “Trail of Tears-Indian Removal Act of
1830,” bronze medal winners for “Nelson Mandelal Versus Apartheid,”
and honorable mention winners for the exhibits “Vietnam War: Coming
Home” and “Watergate.” What an amazing effort by these students and
the staff that supports them.

Success Stories
RREF, which helped fund the substantial cost of having these
speakers appear, recognized the impact such speakers had on our
students and the larger community and wanted to help ensure
that the school district would be able to continue to bring in
quality speakers. As a result, RREF had a special fundraising
effort--Raise the Pirate--at its annual auction and raised just
under $15,000 for the Speaker Series. RREF will continue
its own fundraising efforts and look to partner with other
organizations to help bring in authors/speakers to one or more
schools in the district each year. As Minotti notes, “Collegiate
experiences such as the speaker series are what set our students
and community apart.”
Success Story Spring 2014
Using a Multisensory approach to learning in the Classroom to assist
students with special needs access the curriculum.
We are so thankful for the Rocky River Ed Foundation providing
funding so the Middle School Special Education Department could
purchase multi-sensory support materials to help students with learning
disabilities. These materials have assisted students be better connected
during the learning process.
The students are using headphones
to access information, listen to
stories, connect to educational aides
such as Virtual Nerd to help with
math problems. They can even
listen to me when I am not in the
classroom!
The balls (used in the classrooms in place of chairs) help students focus,
and they LOVE THEM! The balls aren’t used for fun (or maybe they
have a little fun), but rather to help students sit up straight and engage
the muscles and the parts of their brains needed to remain balanced. The
stability ball classroom chairs provide many benefits ranging from quieter
classrooms to more attentive students. I believe that when students sit
on stability balls, both sides of their brains are engaged in keeping their
bodies centered on the balls, and when the brain is stimulated, it’s more
focused on learning. Not only is the brain better suited to processing new
information, young minds are also better able to concentrate on exams,
note-taking, class discussions, and other aspects of classroom learning.
The gel pads are used with students that have difficult time learning, as
they can can feel the gel and see the letter/sound recognition which will
enhance reading skills and, additionally, increase written expression skills.

My students and I have been using the larynx
anatomical model we purchased with the help of
the RREF - it is so helpful for them to be able
to SEE how their voices work, since that’s not
something we can do with the naked eye! Also, I
am beyond excited to expand our music library with
the aid of the RREF. There are so many wonderful
pieces I would love to have my students perform
and enjoy and now I can purchase them thanks to
the RREF!

Kensington Media Center is using the generous
amount granted to upgrade our biography
department, which will be used by all 3rd, 4th, and
5th grade students. In addition, we were able to
purchase new hardcover fiction books reflecting this
year’s Newbery, Caldecott and American Library
Association’s winner and honor titles. The students
are thrilled with the updated biographies that are
coming in as well as the latest ‘Best In Fiction!’ We
are thrilled and honored to be awarded this grant.
