News & Notes From Post 6364 It’s not what you pay to belong, it’s the price you paid to be eligible” Proud to serve since 1899 October 2016 • www.vfw6364.net • 804.288.9597 • email: [email protected] 2016-2017 Commander’s Message On October 19, 1781, British General Lord Cornwallis surrendered 8,000 British soldiers and seamen who were trapped at Yorktown, Va., to a larger French and American force, effectively bringing an end to the Revolutionary War. The Siege of Yorktown, which lasted from Sept. 28 – Oct. 19, 1781, was a decisive victory by a combined force of American Continental Army troops led by General George Washington and French Army Troops led by Comte de Rochambeau over the British Army. This siege was the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary War as the surrender by Cornwallis and the capture of him and his army prompted the British government to negotiate an end to the conflict. - Mike Dunham Officers Commander: Mike Dunham Senior Vice Commander: Thomas Barker Junior Vice Commander: James Hazel Quartermaster: Matthew Kanne Judge Advocate: Charles Hughes Chaplain: J ason Fluhar ty Surgeon: Steven Br yan Adjutant: Char les Hughes Service Officer: Steven Bryan Trustees 1st Year: Freddie Corritone 2nd Year: Jack Boles 3rd Year: Al Pleasants The “Surrender of Lord Cornwallis,” an 1820 painting by John Trumbull, depicts the forces of British Major General Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis (1738-1805) surrendering to French & American forces after the Siege of Yorktown during the American Revolutionary War.
