PGCPS and PGCMLS: Partners in Preventing Summer Slump
Summer slump is a wide-spread phenomenon that can be mitigated with consistent learning
activities and skill reinforcement over the months off of school. This booklet provides
information and resources to help your students stay active readers and learners over the
summer.
Tips to encourage Summer Your Library participation

Ei Include information on pgs 3-4 in report cards or in the summer packet.
Send the parent letter and library card agreement (pgs 6-8) home, too.
El Host a Summer @ Your Library kick-off at your school (this can be part of
other end-of-year events.)
RI Promote the joy of reading over the summer. Explore www.pdcmls.info

Dear Parents and Guardian,
Summer is the perfect time to explore the wonderful world of books and reading.
Working as partners, the Prince George's County Public Schools and the Prince George's
County Memorial Library System created the recommended reading lists on vvww.pcicmls.info.
All of the tiles are available at your public library and were selected with various interests and
reading levels in mind. Encourage your child to choose something that is fun and appeals to
them. A library card application is included in this booklet.
If you need more suggestions, ask the staff at your local public library for help; they are happy
to match a child's interests and reading level to the right books.
Parents should not only encourage their children to read on their own, reinforcing learning from
the school year that has just ended, but also choose books to read aloud at home. Many of the
books on the list are available in recorded book format. Children can improve their
comprehension skills by reading with a recorded book, and recorded books provide great
family entertainment in the car.
It is important for children in all grades to read over the summer. Research has shown that
children who read at least 20 minutes a day during the summer months perform better in
school than those who do not.
The Library offers summer programs for preschoolers, children, teens and adults and each
program features prizes, events and reading suggestions. Go to any branch of the Prince
George's County Memorial Library System to sign up. We hope your child (and you!) will
participate in Summer @ Your Library.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY
MEMORIAL LIBRARY SYSTEM
Dear Parent/Guardian:
The Prince George's County Memorial Library System is cooperating with your child's school
to help their students obtain library cards. Attached is a copy of our library card application.
We hope you take this opportunity to obtain a library card for your child if he/she does not
already have one.
A card may be used to check out material from any branch library in Prince George's County.
We also offer internet access and online databases on our public access computers at the
branch libraries as well as remote access to many online resources from your home computer.
The Prince George's County Memorial Library System makes most materials available to
library customers, regardless of age. Juveniles may not check out videos, DVDs, or films.
Since you are responsible for your child's materials selection, we urge you to become familiar
with the Library's collection to assist your child in choosing appropriate materials.
We need your approval in order to complete the application process. By signing the attached
agreement, you agree to be financially responsible for any overdue fines, lost materials, or any
other fees incurred on your child's library card record. Please record your driver's license
number or other appropriate identification number (i.e. Military ID, Age of Majority Card,
Passport, etc.) in the space provided and sign the back of the agreement. Please return the
signed and completed application with your child to the coordinator at the school. Please
Note: Your ID information and signature are required to complete the application.
Please counsel your child on the importance and value of his or her library card. If your child's
library, card is lost or stolen, report it immediately to the Library. You are responsible for any
materials that are borrowed using the card up until the time it is reported lost or stolen. We
also recommend that your child not loan his or her library card to anyone for any purpose.
Remember, you are responsible for all materials borrowed by anyone using your child's card
and for any and all charges that may be incurred as a result.
We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to serving your family's library needs for
many years to come.
Thank you.
