Highlights of the October 10, 2016, Board of Trustees Meeting
Moment of Silence
Following the flag salute, a moment of silence was held for Norm Bixby and
Gloria Levine.
Norman "Norm" Bixby was hired by the District as a Librarian in 1970. Mr.
Bixby retired in 2005 after 35 years of service. Mr. Bixby passed away on
September 16, 2016 at 78 years of age.
Gloria Levine was hired by the District as a French language teacher in 1966. Ms.
Levine retired in 1987 after 22 years of service. The District was informed that
Ms. Levine recently passed away at 92 years of age
Timely Information from Superintendent Scambray reported that the District has contracted with the
accounting firm of Vicenti, Lloyd & Stutzman to do an outside audit of the
Board and
unaudited actuals reported out at the September 20, 2016 Board Meeting. Dr.
Superintendent
Scambray stated that the audit will take approximately one month to complete
with November 1, 2016 as the goal. Dr. Scambray announced that SHHS
Language Arts teacher and Teacher on Special Assignment Scott Rosencranz was
awarded the High Impact Teacher of the Year in Science, Math, and Technology
at the Innovation in Education Awards dinner last week. Dr. Scambray also
reported that FUHS Principal Rani Goyal was informed that she will be receiving
an award from the California Educational Theater Association in recognition as
an administrator who has played a significant role in the advancement of theater
education.
Gifts Accepted
The Board of Trustees gratefully accepted the following gifts to the District and
directed that a letter of appreciation be sent to the donors.
Mrs. Elaine C. Arbas donated $50 in support of the Marching Band Program
at Buena Park High School.
Mr. and Mrs. Jesus C. Dacuma donated $100 in support of the Marching Band
Program at Buena Park High School.
Mr. and Mrs. Fernando Umali donated $35 in support of the Marching Band
Program at Buena Park High School.
Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Moran donated $50 in support of the Marching Band
Program at Buena Park High School.
Mr. Earle Arbas donated $20 in support of the Marching Band Program at
Buena Park High School.
Mr. and Mrs, Kirk donated $650 in support of the Girls Tennis Program, $700
in support of the Boys Tennis Program, and $600 in support of the Track and
Field Program at Buena Park High School.
Hartzog & Craybill donated $300 in support of the homecoming halftime
activities at Buena Park High School.
Mr. Joseph Cothen donated $270 in support of the Marching Band and Color
Guard Program at Buena Park High School.
The NEA Foundation donated $650 in honor of La Vista High School staff
member Al Rabanera who was nominated by the California Teachers
Association for the 2017 NEA Foundation Awards for Teaching Excellence.
New Board Policy 5136,
Interdistrict Attendance
New Board Policy 5136, Interdistrict Attendance, was presented for first
reading/information and will be submitted for second reading/adoption at the
second Board meeting in October.
Single Plans for Student The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 required districts to be more
accountable for the academic progress of all students. One of the regulations
Achievement 2016/17
outlined in NCLB legislation is that schools must annually develop a Single
Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) that is approved by the School Site
Council for each school and by the district’s governing board.
The Principals of each of the District schools presented the Single Plan for
Student Achievement developed for the 2016/17 school year, articulating what
has changed between last year’s and this year’s plans, and what factors may
have led to meeting or not meeting the goals of the previous year.
Revised Board Bylaw 9321.1, Revised Board Bylaw 9321.1 was adopted. The October 25, 2016 and
November 29, 2016 regular meeting of the Board of Trustees will be

We’re Proud That….
… BPHS student Adriana Aguilar’s AP artwork was selected to represent the entire State of California in
the 2015-16 AP Studio Art Exhibit.
… FUHS teacher Jessica Buckle arranged for six members running for City Council to come to FUHS to
speak to the government classes about politics at the local level and the important issues facing the city at
this year's City Council election.
… LHHS teacher Anna Sanders and students Sheala O'Neal, Jena Tarnowski, Lauren
Bagdonoff, Chloe McClellan, and Iris Martinez participated in the 7th Annual Harmony Center Fine
Art & Craft Fair in Whittier. Jena Tarnowski was awarded first place in the "3D" category for her
woven bag, and Lauren Bagdonoff was awarded an honorable mention in the "Animal" category for a
scratchboard depiction of a mountain lion.
… the LSHS Adult Transition Program was selected to receive a Golden Bell Award.
… the LVHS students under the direction of the student leadership team were able to donate 75 pints of
blood to the Red Cross.
… SOHS teachers Steve Hardy, Joe D'Amelia, Eduardo Avendano, Janet Yeandle and Megan Bowers
lead the technology training day on October 10th. These teachers did an amazing job planning and
delivering lessons to staff members that could be used the next day in classrooms.
… SHHS teacher Scott Rosenkranz was recently honored as an educational technology leader for his
development of Oncore, an app that is improving student engagement and elevating learning around the
world.
… the following 61 TRHS seniors have been named Semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship
