Assignment Instructions
Shakespearean Monologues Objective To work with performing a monologue written in verse, using language that is not commonplace to our era, and still maintaining the distinct character and spirit of the play itself. Assignments Step 1. Choose a Monologue (Due Thursday, February 12) – 20 points You are to select a monologue from a Shakespearean play to perform for this assignment. The monologue must be signed off by Mr. Sagona, prior to the beginning of the class period on Thursday. Step 2. Background Information (Due Tuesday, February 17) – 30 points You are to answer the following questions in detail about the background your monologue: 1. What is the title of the play? 2. Give me a brief summary of the premise (basic story) of the play? This should be no more than a paragraph. 3. What happened immediately before your monologue or what prompts your character to give this speech? 4. Who is present during the monologue to hear what is said? If no one is present, then what is your character’s motivation for the speech he is giving? Step 3. Rewritten in Modern Times (Due Wednesday, February 18) – 30 points Rewrite your monologue as it would be spoken in modern times. Do not overly summarize the concepts being spoken about, but there should be a sever change in the language used to express the thoughts and feelings of the character. Step 4. Memorize (Due Monday, February 23) – 30 points You will recite your memorized monologue quickly and effectively. Step 5.
