THEMES Three themes were presented at Community Workshop #2 for consideration. The themes presented at the Community Workshop were purposely presented as distinct and unique themes. The purpose of this method was to provide workshop participants the opportunity to reflect on what they thought the essence of the new park should be. Although elements of all three themes may be included in the final program, plan and detail design of the park, it is recommended that one theme dominate. ECOLOGY Ecology will be a sub-theme in all programs to ensure that the environment is protected and enhanced in terms of storm water management and habitat creation. If ecology is the dominant theme, it will address the whole site as a venue for ecological sustainability and education. It will be a passive park, providing an opportunity to disseminate information on the regions environments and the Town Center Park as a prototypical example of restoration and development as a natural area. Extensive topographic change, storm water management, habitat creation, and extensive plantings will create a passive park for relaxing and learning about natural systems in this region of the State. GARDENS With Gardens as the theme, the emphasis will be to create an arrangement of spaces that display different gardens both as horticultural display and as settings for passive recreation. Although sculpture and other art may be included as incidental items, the dominant program and activities are related to an urban, park/garden. Seasonal horticultural displays, a flower show, and an arboretum or botanical garden could be arranged to create a place for learning and enjoyment in what is essentially a passive park for walking and sitting. ART With the theme of Art, the park itself would be designed as a highly creative visual experience expressed in attractive earth sculpture, artistic gardens, fountains, paving, lighting, etc to accommodate sculpture, murals, temporary art shows, festivals, and small performances. These could expand onto adjacent streets for special weekend festivals and could be modified for each season of the year. If Art where to be the dominate theme, the park will be developed to enhance opportunities to display visual arts and accommodate performing arts possibly including facilities at the Elementary School and also possibly including an arts center in the park. This theme presumes that through public and private initiative the Town of Cary will be promoted as an Arts Center. A strategic plan would be developed to promote a vision and obtain funding for Cary to be a destination attraction for visitors and residents to enjoy permanent and changing exhibits and performances to give a positive ambiance and identity to Town Center.
