HOW TO BUILD A SPICE RACK If you are tired of continually running around the kitchen trying to locate your spices when preparing meals then it's time to get organised and build a spice rack. DOZEN DESIGN There are many designs that will suit your spice jar dimensions and quantities. Our design is suited to house up to a dozen standard sized spice jars. BUYING THE TIMBER Bunnings stock a wide range of timber that can be used to build your spice rack. Your timber choice will depend whether you want to paint or stain your timber to match your kitchen's colour scheme. We will require 212.5cms of timber that is 7.5cms wide and 1.25cms thick. CUTTING THE TIMBER There are 10 pieces required for this design; these are 2 x 31.5cms, 4 x 25cms and 4 x 12.5cms. Measure and mark your dimensions and then cut your timber to length with a handsaw and mitre box or a circular saw (be sure to wear the correct safety equipment). MAKING THE SLOTS Measure the area that your spice jars will require and then layout one piece and evenly mark the required space allowing a 1.25cm gap where the pieces will join together (Fig 2). It's important that the slots are evenly distributed along each piece so that the jar holes are square. For pieces of similar length, use one piece as a template. CUTTING THE SLOTS If you have access to a table saw, simply attach a dado blade and make incisions 1.25cms wide at 3.75cms or halfway into the timber (Fig 2). You may also choose to use a jigsaw to cut the sides of the slots and then using a chisel and hammer knock the slots out. SAND THE TIMBER Sand all the edges of the spice rack, especially those that have splinters from cutting, then using a wooden block, hammer the pieces together to make sure that they fit (Fig 3). APPLY THE FINISH You may choose to paint or stain the spice rack to match the décor of the kitchen. 3.75 cm Building a spice rack is a reasonably simple project that the whole family can be involved in and it is also a great present for mum.
